Today, September 13, 2026, marks 30 years since the passing of Tupac Amaru Shakur, the legendary rapper, actor, poet, activist and cultural icon whose extraordinary life and career continue to influence generations around the world.
Tupac Shakur died on September 13, 1996, at just 25 years old, six days after he was critically wounded in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. Three decades later, his name remains deeply embedded in the history of hip-hop and popular culture.

Born on June 16, 1971, Tupac was far more than a successful rapper. He was a storyteller who used music to confront some of the most difficult realities of his generation, including poverty, racism, police brutality, inequality, violence, family struggles and the complexities of growing up in disadvantaged communities.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame describes Tupac as an artist whose work combined confrontation and vulnerability, allowing him to speak about social issues while also revealing deeply personal emotions. His music demonstrated an unusual ability to move between anger, political commentary, romance, vulnerability and hope.
Songs such as “Dear Mama,” “California Love,” “Changes” and “I Get Around” became defining works of his career. His 1995 album Me Against the World further established him as one of the most important voices in hip-hop, while All Eyez on Me, released in 1996, became his best-selling album and produced major hits, including “California Love” and “How Do U Want It.”
But Tupac's influence extended beyond music.
He also established himself as an actor, appearing in films including Juice, Poetic Justice, Above the Rim and Gridlock'd. Even during the final months of his life, his acting career was developing, with work on the film Gang Related.
His life, however, was marked by controversy, legal battles, personal conflicts and the increasingly intense East Coast-West Coast rivalry that dominated hip-hop during the 1990s. His public image often existed at the intersection of artist, activist, celebrity and controversial figure.
On September 7, 1996, after attending the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon boxing match in Las Vegas, Tupac was travelling as a passenger in a BMW driven by Death Row Records executive Marion “Suge” Knight when a vehicle pulled alongside them and gunfire erupted. Tupac was struck multiple times. Despite medical treatment, he died six days later.
For decades, his death remained one of the most enduring mysteries in popular culture. In 2023, authorities arrested Duane “Keffe D” Davis in connection with the killing. In August 2026, a jury found Davis responsible for Tupac's death, marking a significant development three decades after the rapper's murder.
Yet even after his death, Tupac's voice never disappeared.
His music continued to be released posthumously, his words continued to be quoted, and his influence spread across generations of artists. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame eventually recognised his enormous contribution to music, inducting him as a performer and highlighting his lasting influence on artists including Kendrick Lamar, Nas, J. Cole, Eminem, 50 Cent and Drake.
Perhaps that is the greatest testament to Tupac Shakur.
Thirty years after his death, Tupac is still being discussed, studied, remembered and heard.
His life was short, complicated and controversial—but his artistic legacy proved much larger than the years he was given.
