An Ohio church congregation was left stunned after its leadership publicly revealed that the ministry’s senior leadership team has been living in a polygynous marriage.
The revelation came during a recent service at LifeWorks Church in Wickliffe, Ohio, where Prophetess Lydia Ford took the pulpit and introduced church minister Shakayla Ford as her husband’s second wife.
Lydia Ford explained that the arrangement was not a recent development, revealing that she and Shakayla had been part of the same marital arrangement for nearly three years before it was publicly disclosed to the congregation.
According to reports and footage circulating from the service, Lydia described Shakayla as her husband’s second wife and referred to her as her “sister in marriage.” Shakayla, who was already known to members of the church through her ministry, subsequently addressed the congregation herself.
She acknowledged the surprise surrounding the announcement but described the relationship as a family dynamic rather than one characterised by rivalry or conflict. She also maintained that she had not been diminished by the arrangement and said she believed it was consistent with what she understood to be God’s will.
The announcement has since generated considerable discussion online, particularly because the revelation involves a Christian pastor and church leadership.
Pastor Prophet Israel T. Ford later defended the marriage arrangement on social media, openly challenging the widely held Christian belief that marriage should involve one man and one woman.
Ford wrote that society had taught people that “a man should have one wife only,” but argued that this position was “unbiblical.” He urged followers to watch his full sermon on the subject, saying the issue represented an unpopular truth that many pastors were unwilling to address.
In defending his position, Ford cited Exodus 21:10, a passage that addresses a man taking another wife and sets out obligations concerning the existing wife’s food, clothing and marital rights. He presented the passage as part of his biblical basis for accepting polygyny.
Ford also made it clear that he understood his position could attract criticism and potentially cause some people to distance themselves from him. However, he said he had no intention of choosing public approval over what he believed God had revealed to him.
The controversy has consequently moved beyond the personal circumstances of the Ford family and into a wider theological debate over whether polygyny can be reconciled with Christian teachings on marriage.
While the Old Testament contains accounts of prominent figures, including Abraham, Jacob, David and Solomon, having multiple wives, many contemporary Christian denominations interpret later biblical teachings as establishing monogamy as the appropriate standard for Christian marriage. Critics of Ford’s position have also pointed to New Testament passages concerning marriage and the qualifications for church leaders.
As the video of the announcement continues to circulate online, the unusual disclosure has prompted renewed debate among Christians and social-media users over biblical interpretation, marriage, church leadership and whether ancient references to polygynous relationships should be understood as approval or merely descriptions of practices that existed in biblical times.
Ford has indicated that a more detailed sermon explaining his theological position would follow, potentially providing further insight into the biblical interpretation behind the controversial marital arrangement.
