“I Don’t Want Wike Bringing Tinubu’s Interest to Oyo State” – Why Taofeek Adegoke Chose ADC Over PDP

Oyo State's 2027 governorship race is beginning to attract attention as political parties and their candidates position themselves ahead of the February 6, 2027 election. One of the emerging talking points is the decision of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate, Chief Olooye Adegboyega Taofeek Adegoke, to pitch his political tent with the ADC rather than remain in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Explaining the thinking behind his decision, Adegoke declared:

“I DO NOT WANT A SITUATION WHERE WIKE WILL COME TO ME ONE DAY AND SAY THAT MR. PRESIDENT HAS AN INTEREST IN OYO STATE. THAT IS WHY I CHOSE ADC OVER PDP.”

His statement reflects his concern about the possibility of external political interests influencing decisions in Oyo State, particularly if he had remained within the PDP.

By mentioning Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former governor of Rivers State, Adegoke appears to be drawing attention to the influence of powerful political figures and the possibility of national political interests intersecting with state-level governance.

The statement also raises an important question about political independence: how much freedom should a governor have to make decisions in the interest of his state without interference from influential political figures outside its borders?

Adegoke's choice of the ADC appears to be part of his attempt to establish a political identity outside the established power structures associated with the PDP and other major political parties.

The ADC candidate has previously presented himself as an alternative to the established political camps in Oyo State, maintaining that his ambition is driven by his development plans rather than dependence on a political godfather.

In September 2026, during an interview with Arise News, he described himself as the authentic ADC governorship candidate and defended his emergence following disagreements over parallel governorship primaries within the party. He also referred to the Independent National Electoral Commission's publication of his name and his certificate of return as evidence supporting his position.

His political campaign is built around his proposed SOLUTIONS 2027 agenda, which covers security, agriculture, job creation, urban renewal, healthcare, education, industrialisation, infrastructure, teachers' welfare and technology.

Among his proposals are the rehabilitation of inner roads across the state's 33 local government areas, the revival of moribund industries and improved agricultural productivity.

His professional background as a chartered accountant and businessman is also central to his argument for leadership, with the candidate promising to bring financial management experience and private-sector ideas into public administration.

However, his comments about Wike and President Bola Tinubu introduce another dimension to the 2027 political conversation in Oyo State: the relationship between state political autonomy and the influence of national political figures.

With Governor Seyi Makinde approaching the end of his constitutionally permitted second term, the succession contest is attracting candidates from different political platforms, including the APC, APM, ADC and Accord Party.

For Adegoke, the choice of the ADC is apparently about retaining political independence and avoiding a situation in which external interests could influence decisions concerning Oyo State.

Whether the ADC can translate that political positioning into a convincing statewide campaign remains a question for the electorate to consider.

Ultimately, the people of Oyo State will be looking beyond party labels and political declarations to examine the candidates' credibility, programmes, experience and capacity to deliver on their promises.
