“NOW, I’M YOUR NEXT GOVERNOR!” – Byron Donalds Celebrates Historic Election Victory in Florida, Set to Become State’s First Black Governor

Republican Congressman Byron Donalds has emphatically declared himself Florida’s next governor following his victory over Democratic candidate David Jolly in the November 3, 2026, gubernatorial election.

Donalds, who received the backing of President Donald Trump, emerged victorious in a closely contested election that attracted significant national attention, particularly because of its implications for the Republican Party and the political future of Florida.

Following the announcement of his victory, Donalds expressed excitement and confidence about the responsibility ahead, declaring his commitment to making Florida more affordable, safer and economically prosperous for its residents.

His victory marks a significant milestone in Florida’s political history. When inaugurated, Donalds will become the first Black governor of Florida and the first elected Black Republican governor in American history.

According to preliminary election results published by Florida election authorities, Donalds and his running mate, Bryan Avila, secured approximately 50.02 per cent of the votes, defeating Democratic challenger David Jolly and his running mate, Gwen Graham, who received approximately 48.71 per cent.

The election was considerably more competitive than some political observers had anticipated, particularly given the Republican Party’s longstanding dominance in Florida and its substantial advantage in voter registration.

Donalds will succeed outgoing Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, whose eight-year administration significantly influenced Florida's political direction and established the state as one of the strongest Republican political bases in the United States.

During his victory speech, Donalds acknowledged the support of President Trump, his family and outgoing Governor DeSantis. He also acknowledged Jolly's participation in what became a closely fought political contest.

“I want you to hear from Florida that we are still red,” Donalds declared while thanking Trump for his endorsement and support.

His victory also represents an important political achievement for Trump, who had invested considerable political influence in supporting Donalds' gubernatorial ambition.

Affordability Takes Centre Stage

Throughout the campaign, Donalds focused heavily on economic concerns affecting ordinary Floridians, particularly rising living costs, housing affordability, property taxes and homeowners' insurance premiums.

He promised to pursue policies aimed at reducing property taxes, streamlining development permits and addressing certain insurance-related costs.

He also campaigned on strengthening immigration enforcement, improving government transparency and maintaining conservative policies established under the outgoing DeSantis administration.

His Democratic opponent, David Jolly, however, attempted to build a broader coalition by focusing on the cost of living, housing, energy demands and the economic implications of expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure across Florida.

Despite the competitive nature of the contest, Donalds maintained his advantage, supported by significant campaign funding, Republican organisational strength and Trump's endorsement.

Campaign finance figures reported by Florida media showed that Donalds had a substantial financial advantage over Jolly.

A Historic Chapter for Florida

Donalds' election victory goes beyond another Republican electoral success. It represents a historic development in a state that has remained under Republican gubernatorial leadership for nearly three decades.

His emergence as Florida's first Black governor will attract national attention, particularly within the Republican Party, where his political rise could strengthen conversations about the party's relationship with Black voters.

He is expected to be sworn in as Florida's 47th governor on January 5, 2027, with former Florida state senator Bryan Avila serving as lieutenant governor.

As Donalds prepares to take over from DeSantis, attention will now shift from campaign promises to governance.

For millions of Floridians, the real test will be whether his administration can deliver on its promises of economic relief, affordable housing, lower insurance costs, public safety and improved opportunities.

The campaign is over. The responsibility of governing begins.
