Ishola Ishola Picks the Wrong Fight? Vacation Haus Hotel Owner Challenges Blogger Over Alleged Links to Seye Famojuro
A fresh controversy has erupted on Facebook following allegations by political activist and blogger Ishola Ishola that Vacation Haus Hotel is allegedly owned by Otunba Seye Famojuro, a prominent figure associated with the Oyo State Government.
The allegation has attracted considerable criticism, with several social media users questioning the blogger's research, while the woman identified as the hotel's Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Funmi Danielle Fatoberu, has reportedly demanded an apology and threatened legal action.
The development raises an important question about political activism, responsible journalism and the consequences of making potentially damaging allegations against individuals and their businesses without presenting verifiable evidence.
The Allegation That Sparked the Controversy
In a Facebook post that has since generated heated reactions, Ishola called for an investigation into the hotel, alleging that it belongs to Otunba Seye Famojuro but is being operated by a woman.
He wrote:
> "We need to investigate this hotel. It belongs to Seye Famojuro. This lady claimed that he is the founder. Her name is CEO / Managing Director: Funmi Danielle Fatoberu."
However, the allegation immediately attracted criticism from people who appeared familiar with the woman and her professional background.
Several commenters questioned whether Ishola had conducted adequate background checks before publishing the allegation.
One commenter challenged him by pointing out that the woman had previously served as a director at Carlton Gate Hotel between 2014 and 2017 and had been the CEO/MD of Cecy Lawry Bridals since December 2016.
Interestingly, publicly available professional profile information also identifies a Funmilayo Fatoberu as Managing Director of Vacation Haus Hotel since March 2022, with previous experience at Carlton Gate Hotel and Cecy Lawry Bridals. The difference in the names published by Ishola and the professional profile is another detail that deserves clarification.
Social Media Users Question His Findings
The reactions were particularly interesting, with several people openly defending Funmi Fatoberu and questioning the credibility of the allegation.
One commenter wrote:
> "On this one, you are absolutely wrong, and I must correct that impression. I have known Funmi Fatoberu for over two decades, and I can confidently speak about her character, hard work, and dedication."
The commenter further explained that Funmi had built her business through personal determination, intelligence, resilience and hard work, insisting that her achievements should not be unnecessarily politicised.
Another commenter warned Ishola that the woman could take legal action if the allegation was false.
Others were even more direct, advising him to conduct proper investigations before making public accusations.
Some suggested that rather than making allegations on Facebook, anyone with credible evidence of financial misconduct should submit a properly documented petition to the appropriate investigative authorities.
Hotel Owner Responds, Threatens Legal Action
The controversy took another dimension when the woman identified as the owner of Vacation Haus Hotel released a video addressing the allegations.
In the video shared on Facebook, she reportedly demanded an apology from Ishola Ishola and threatened to institute legal proceedings against him if he failed to retract the allegation.
Her response has further intensified the debate, with several commenters urging her to pursue legal action rather than allow what they consider an attempt to damage her reputation to go unchallenged.
Comments included calls for an apology, demands that Ishola provide evidence and suggestions that the matter should be settled through the courts.
Some even described the incident as a warning to social media commentators who allegedly prioritise engagement and political relevance over responsible reporting.
Political Activism Is Not a Substitute for Evidence
There is an important distinction between investigating public officials, questioning government activities and making allegations about private individuals and their businesses.
Political criticism is legitimate, and nobody should be above public scrutiny. However, allegations of hidden ownership, corruption or improper financial relationships require credible documentation.
Available hotel listings identify Vacation Haus Hotel at Plot 10, Federal Housing Estate, Ikolaba, Ibadan, and provide information about its accommodation and hospitality services. They do not independently establish the hotel's beneficial ownership or substantiate the allegation linking it to Seye Famojuro.
Nigeria's Constitution guarantees freedom of expression under Section 39, but that freedom does not remove the legal responsibility associated with potentially defamatory publications.
Ishola may therefore have to provide evidence supporting his allegation or consider the consequences of publishing information that the affected person disputes.
At this point, the ownership allegation remains unverified, and the threatened legal action should not be mistaken for an established court case or finding of liability.
My take: If you want to expose corruption, do your homework, gather your evidence and present verifiable facts. Do not turn every successful businesswoman or businessman into a political suspect simply because you want to score political points.
Ishola may have opened a controversy he did not adequately prepare for. Whether he can substantiate his allegation or will eventually issue an apology remains to be seen.
One thing is certain: Facebook is not a courtroom, and making an allegation is not the same as proving it.
