TINUBU TO OBI: “YOU COULDN’T DEFEAT EROSION IN ANAMBRA, BUT I TAMED THE ATLANTIC OCEAN” — PRESIDENT TURNS 2027 CAMPAIGN INTO LEADERSHIP SHOWDOWN IN UYO

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken a direct swipe at former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, questioning his leadership credentials ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Tinubu made the remarks on Friday, November 6, 2026, while addressing supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

In a politically charged speech, the President accused Obi of failing to confront the devastating erosion challenges in Anambra State during his eight-year tenure as governor, contrasting the former governor's record with what he described as his own success in confronting the Atlantic Ocean during his time as Governor of Lagos State.

Referring to Obi without initially mentioning his name, Tinubu said:

"There is one who said he is in one party they call NDC, who is running for president. He ran away from erosion in Anambra State. He could not confront erosion. I, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, confronted the Atlantic Ocean. I tamed it for you."

The President also praised Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, for his administration's efforts in addressing erosion and executing infrastructure projects across the state.

Tinubu's comments represent another escalation in the growing political exchanges between the President and Obi as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election.

Tinubu's Atlantic Ocean Argument Against Obi

The President's reference to the Atlantic Ocean is a familiar political talking point that dates back to his 2023 presidential campaign.

During his campaign visit to Anambra State in February 2023, Tinubu had promised to address the state's erosion menace, drawing comparisons with his administration's efforts to protect Lagos from coastal challenges.

At the time, he presented himself as a leader with the experience and capacity to confront environmental challenges, promising to bring similar interventions to Anambra.

However, his latest comments have turned that campaign argument into a direct political attack on Obi, whose administration governed Anambra between 2006 and 2014.

Obi has consistently built his political reputation around prudent financial management, accountability, public-sector reforms and investment in education and healthcare. Tinubu's latest remarks appear designed to challenge that reputation by shifting attention towards infrastructure delivery and the ability of political leaders to confront difficult challenges.

Obi's NDC Presidential Ambition

Peter Obi emerged as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in May 2026 after leaving the Labour Party and joining the NDC.

His emergence has positioned him as one of Tinubu's major challengers in the 2027 presidential contest. Obi subsequently announced former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.

With the opposition landscape undergoing significant realignments, the political contest is increasingly becoming a battle over leadership records, political credibility and competing visions for Nigeria's future.

Tinubu Begs Akwa Ibom Voters for Another Mandate

Beyond his attacks on opposition figures, Tinubu also appealed directly to the people of Akwa Ibom State to support his re-election ambition.

The President urged residents to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate actively in the forthcoming elections, presenting his administration's promises of education, development and a better future as reasons to support him.

He said:

"Vote for me, I am begging you for the sake of your future. I promise you a better future, education and development."

The President also reiterated his commitment to tackling poverty, ignorance and economic regression, while promising further opportunities through education, skills development, employment and infrastructure.

His visit to Akwa Ibom also featured the inauguration of several projects executed by Governor Umo Eno's administration, including the new international terminal at Victor Attah International Airport, the International Airport Hospital, Ibom Aviation Village and other infrastructure projects.

As the 2027 election approaches, Tinubu's latest remarks demonstrate that the presidential contest is already moving beyond policy discussions into increasingly personal assessments of the records of political opponents.

Whether the President's Atlantic Ocean comparison will convince voters or provide fresh ammunition for his critics remains to be seen. What is becoming increasingly clear, however, is that the battle for Nigeria's presidency is gathering momentum.
