Entertainment is a wide field and an industry mostly dominated by the youths. It can be defined as the action of providing or being provided with amusement, an event, performance, or activity designed to entertain others. The action of receiving a guest or guests and providing them with food and drink.
As it is stated above it means that nobody can do without entertainment. Even the poor have their dose of enjoyment at their own level.
The stakeholders in the entertainment industry are also part of the state and they wield some form of influence.
If you ask me, what politics and government have done to support entertainment in Oyo State, I would say they have done nothing. Oyo state has a ministry of culture and tourism which is supposed to create an environment and platform to support entertainment activities but from the experiences of stakeholders in the local entertainment industry in ibadan they are not responsive for calls for support for events in the state.
Let us x-ray each of the candidates contesting for the Oyo State Governorship seat. We can say Engineer Seyi Makinde government have passively supported entertainment by appointing a Fuji musician, Taiwo Akande Adebisi popularly known as Taye Currency as Culture Ambassador. But this just seem like a political patronage because Taye Currency is known as his supporter who also has a politician son who is a member of the state house of assembly. The remodeling of the Adamasingba Stadium and other sports facility across the state can also be seen as a passive support by creating an enabling environment for sports to thrive. Sport is also a form of entertainment.
Adebayo Adelabu is also known to passively support entertainment though we believe his establishment of hotels is personal and his business. There are no signs or track records of major entertainment events which he sponsors at his hotels so far.
Teslim Folarin and others on the photo collage above have not been traced to any form of support for the entertainment and creative industry as at the time of writing this report.
Lagos State government is known to fully support entertainment activities in the state. The don't only support by representation or mouth they fund events. Infact, i heard they have a budget from which they sponsor youthful activities in the state. Infact, it is known that the fifth pillar of the Greater Lagos developmental agenda is Entertainment and Tourism. Lagos State is known to organize an end of the year party amongst many others where several artistes are paid to perform. The event is tagged "Greater Lagos Fiesta". The event holds for days in different venues across the state.
Oyo state government should be intentional about supporting the entertainment and creative industry. They should stop being myopic about these activities that gives the youths joy.
The government should have passion to meet the yearning of the public and promote tourism, arts and culture.
