Nigerian Boxer Segun Olanrewaju Dies After Collapsing During Bout in Ghana

Tragic Loss in Ghana: Nigerian Boxer Segun 'Success' Olanrewaju Dies During Bout

In a heartbreaking incident that has sent shockwaves through the boxing world, Nigerian boxer Segun 'Success' Olanrewaju collapsed and died during a match in Ghana on Saturday. The bout took place at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra during Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League. Olanrewaju, a former National and West African light-heavyweight champion, was competing against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu when he suddenly lost consciousness. Remarkably, he was ahead on points at the time of the collapse.

A video capturing the moment Olanrewaju fell in the ring has circulated widely on social media, eliciting an outpouring of grief and tributes from fans, fellow boxers, and sports officials. Many have praised his dedication to the sport and mourn his untimely passing.

This incident adds to a series of tragic events involving Nigerian boxers in Ghana. In May 2024, Sherif Lawal died after being knocked out in his professional debut against Portuguese boxer Malam Varela at the Harrow Leisure Centre. Lawal collapsed in the sixth round and was pronounced dead despite immediate medical attention.

These tragedies have intensified discussions about the health and safety protocols in place to protect boxers, particularly during international competitions. The boxing community is urged to reevaluate existing measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

As investigations into the causes of these deaths continue, the legacies of Olanrewaju and Lawal serve as poignant reminders of the inherent risks associated with professional boxing. Their contributions to the sport will not be forgotten, and their families have expressed gratitude for the support and condolences received from around the world.
