We Need Jobs, Not Handouts! – Bauchi Governor’s Son Blasts Seyi Tinubu Ahead of Visit

Bauchi Governor's Son Urges Seyi Tinubu: 'Empower Our Youths with Opportunities, Not Handouts'

In a recent appeal that has sparked discussions on youth empowerment strategies, Shamsuddeen Bala Mohammed, son of Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, called on Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, to focus on sustainable empowerment initiatives for Bauchi youths rather than temporary handouts. This plea comes ahead of Seyi Tinubu's anticipated visit to Bauchi State as part of his Renewed Hope Youth Empowerment (RHYE) tour.

A Call for Sustainable Empowerment

Shamsuddeen Mohammed took to social media to express his concerns, emphasizing the need for lasting solutions to youth unemployment and underemployment in Bauchi State. He urged Seyi Tinubu to provide resources that would enable youths to become self-reliant. In his message, he stated:

> "Please, when coming to Bauchi for the #RHYE, empower our youths with employment, Keke NAPEP, money to start a business, ICT infrastructure, and training for crypto trading, and so on. Please, we, the youths of Bauchi, don't need rice and food in nylon bags during Ramadan. Teach our youths how to fish, rather than feed them for one day. They are not beggars."

Political Reactions and Criticisms

The appeal has elicited varied reactions from political entities within the state. The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) of Bauchi State criticized Shamsuddeen's plea, interpreting it as an acknowledgment of the current administration's shortcomings in addressing youth unemployment. In a statement, the PRP remarked:

> "It is shameful that Mr. Shamsuddeen is calling upon Seyi Tinubu to fill the gaps left by his father's administration. Such an appeal not only underscores the shortcomings in the governance of Bauchi State but also reflects an unwillingness to hold accountable those in positions of power who are responsible for the well-being of their constituents."

The PRP further accused the current administration of exacerbating economic challenges by demolishing business structures without providing viable alternatives, thereby hindering entrepreneurial efforts among the youth.

The Importance of Sustainable Youth Empowerment

Shamsuddeen's appeal underscores a broader discourse on the effectiveness of youth empowerment programs in Nigeria. While philanthropic gestures such as food donations provide immediate relief, they may not address the systemic issues contributing to youth unemployment and poverty. Advocates for sustainable empowerment emphasize the need for initiatives that equip youths with skills, resources, and opportunities to achieve long-term self-sufficiency.

As Seyi Tinubu's visit approaches, stakeholders and observers alike are keen to see how the Renewed Hope Youth Empowerment initiative will align with these calls for sustainable development, potentially setting a precedent for youth empowerment strategies across the nation.
