Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has assured the family and people of Oyo State that the late former Governor Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo will be accorded a befitting state burial in recognition of his remarkable contributions to the development of the state and Nigeria at large.
Governor Makinde made the promise on Monday, April 15, 2025, during an official condolence visit to the late Olunloyo's private residence in Molete, Ibadan. The governor was received by members of the Olunloyo family and close associates, as he signed the condolence register, paying glowing tribute to the deceased.
Dr. Victor Olunloyo, who passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2025, at the age of 89, was a respected intellectual, politician, and administrator. He served as the Governor of the old Oyo State during the Second Republic under the banner of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) from 1983 until the military coup later that year.
In his remarks, Governor Makinde described the late Olunloyo as "a fountain of wisdom, a political icon, and a towering pillar of intellect whose service to Oyo State and Nigeria will never be forgotten."
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of an elder statesman, a true son of Ibadan, and one of the finest brains this country ever produced. As a state, we will give him the kind of burial befitting a leader of his stature,” Makinde said.
He also acknowledged the late governor’s contributions to governance, education, and public policy, noting that his intellect and analytical insights made him a unique figure in Nigerian politics.
The governor emphasized that the state government will collaborate closely with the Olunloyo family to finalize burial arrangements that reflect the legacy of the late governor, ensuring he is laid to rest with full honor and respect.
Dr. Olunloyo, a mathematician by training and a former commissioner in the Western Region before his brief tenure as governor, remained a prominent voice in Nigeria's political and intellectual discourse long after his time in office.
Conclusion:
As tributes continue to pour in from within and outside Nigeria, Governor Makinde’s promise to honor the memory of Dr. Victor Olunloyo reaffirms Oyo State's respect for its past leaders and the legacies they leave behind. The coming days are expected to feature official announcements regarding funeral arrangements.
