Atiku Challenges Tinubu: Trade Your Escalade for Innoson to Prove 'Nigeria First' Commitment

In a pointed critique of President Bola Tinubu's "Nigeria First" policy, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on the President to demonstrate genuine commitment to promoting indigenous industries by replacing his official Cadillac Escalade with a vehicle manufactured by Nigeria's own Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM).

Atiku's challenge underscores a broader concern about the consistency between the government's rhetoric and its actions regarding economic patriotism. He emphasized the importance of leading by example, stating that true leadership in promoting local industries begins with personal choices that reflect nationalistic values.

In a statement issued by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku criticized the administration for what he perceives as a disconnect between its "Nigeria First" advocacy and its actual practices. He urged the government to focus on uniting and healing the nation, rather than making divisive comments or questioning the patriotism of Nigerians.

The former Vice President's remarks come amid ongoing debates about the government's economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of the exchange rate. Atiku has previously expressed concerns about the rapid implementation of these reforms without adequate stakeholder consultation, suggesting that a more gradual approach would have been beneficial.

In response, the Presidency has dismissed Atiku's criticisms, labeling them as "cheap talk" and accusing him of peddling economic fantasies. Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, argued that Atiku's proposed alternatives lack detail and have already been rejected by Nigerians in the 2023 elections.

The exchange highlights the ongoing tension between the current administration and opposition figures over the direction of Nigeria's economic policies. Atiku's challenge serves as a call for greater accountability and alignment between the government's public declarations and its actions, particularly in supporting local industries and fostering economic growth.
