Ibadan Traditional Leaders Reject Alaafin's Appointment as Chairman of Oyo Obas Council

Tensions are escalating in Oyo State as prominent traditional leaders from Ibadan, including the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Mogajis (family heads), Baales (village chiefs), and other notable figures, have voiced strong opposition to the Oyo State House of Assembly's proposal to appoint the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, as the permanent Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

The Ibadan leaders argue that this move undermines the traditional hierarchy and customs of the region. They contend that the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, should rightfully hold the position, given Ibadan's historical and political significance within the state.

This controversy follows the recent appointment of Oba Owoade as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo by Governor Seyi Makinde, a decision that has already sparked disputes among various royal families and kingmakers in Oyo. Nine royal families, collectively known as the Atiba 9, have rejected Owoade's appointment, citing violations of traditional selection processes and alleging that the governor bypassed established customs and legal procedures.
