The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to upholding religious freedom and boosting internally generated revenue through strategic investment in culture and tourism.
This commitment was expressed by Governor ‘Seyi Makinde, who was represented by his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, at the 2025 World Egungun Festival held today, at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan. The governor noted that the tourism sector in the state has long been overlooked, despite its significant economic potential for both individuals and government. He commended the vibrant display by masquerades from across the globe, praising their commitment to cultural preservation and heritage.
The Governor emphasized that cultural festivals like the Egungun Festival are not only vital for promoting cultural identity but also hold great promise for enhancing the state’s economy through increased tourist activity and global engagement.
Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, expressed deep appreciation to all traditional and cultural groups, dignitaries, and foreign consular representatives who attended the festival. He particularly acknowledged the presence of traditional rulers and international delegates whose participation elevated the prestige of the event.
