Lagos Invests ₦8.5 Billion in Cultural Festivals to Boost Tourism and Creative Economy

In a significant move to bolster its tourism and creative sectors, the Lagos State Government announced an expenditure of approximately ₦8.5 billion on over 143 cultural festivals and events within the past year. This investment underscores the state's commitment to positioning Lagos as a premier destination for cultural tourism and creative enterprise.

The disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. The briefing was part of the activities commemorating Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second year in office during his second term.

Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka emphasized that the substantial investment aims to reshape the creative and tourism landscape of Lagos State. By funding a diverse array of festivals and events, the government seeks to celebrate the state's rich cultural heritage, stimulate economic growth, and create employment opportunities for its residents.

Among the notable events supported is the 'Detty December' celebration, which in 2024 attracted over 1.2 million visitors from Nigeria and the diaspora. The festival featured performances by prominent Nigerian artists, including Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage, and Olamide, solidifying Lagos's reputation as Africa's entertainment capital.

In addition to entertainment events, the state has endorsed cultural festivals such as the Olokun World Festival in Badagry. The 2024 edition of the festival drew over 50,000 participants, including traditional rulers and cultural enthusiasts from Nigeria and neighboring countries, highlighting the festival's growing international appeal.
