Oyo Youth Summit 2025: A Missed Opportunity Amidst Lofty Promises and Missteps

The Oyo State Youth Summit 2025, held in Ibadan, was anticipated as a landmark event to empower and inspire the state's youth. With Governor Seyi Makinde and business magnate Mama Bovas delivering motivational speeches, expectations were high. However, beneath the surface of these inspiring addresses, attendees voiced concerns over the summit's execution, questioning its effectiveness in truly addressing the needs and aspirations of Oyo's young population.

Inspiring Words, Questionable Impact

Governor Makinde, in his address, emphasized the importance of self-employment, sharing his personal journey of working for only five years before establishing his own company. He urged youths to take charge of their futures, highlighting the state's commitment to preparing them for leadership roles.
Mama Bovas recounted her humble beginnings as a housemaid, stressing the significance of resilience and choosing a supportive life partner in achieving success.

While these narratives were motivating, many attendees felt that the summit lacked actionable strategies and tangible support to translate these stories into real opportunities for the youth.

Panel Sessions: A Disconnect with the Youth

The panel discussions, intended to provide insights and mentorship, were met with criticism. Attendees noted a lack of relatability among the panelists, with some suggesting that popular figures like Kie Kie, who served as a moderator, could have offered more value as panelists. The absence of youthful voices that resonate with the current generation was seen as a missed opportunity to inspire and engage effectively.

Entertainment and Hospitality Shortcomings

Performances by artists such as Soft, Camry, and Sade Blaq added vibrancy to the event. However, logistical issues marred the experience. Reports indicated that refreshments were selectively distributed, favoring party affiliates and special guests, leaving many attendees without provisions. This perceived partiality raised questions about the inclusivity and planning of the summit.

Youth Empowerment: Promises vs. Reality

Despite the governor's previous announcements of initiatives like the Omituntun 2.0 Enterprise Skill Development Programme, aimed at training and empowering 500 youths across the state, the summit saw minimal direct empowerment. Attendees expressed disappointment that, out of over 5,000 youths present, only one individual received tangible support. This disparity between promised programs and on-ground execution has led to skepticism about the state's commitment to youth development.

A Call for Genuine Engagement

The Oyo State Youth Summit 2025 highlighted the administration's recognition of youth as pivotal to the state's future. However, the event's shortcomings underscore the need for more than just inspirational rhetoric. For meaningful progress, the state must ensure that such summits translate into actionable strategies, inclusive participation, and tangible support that genuinely empower the youth.
