In a recent development highlighting the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has publicly apologized to First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu following a disruption at an empowerment event in Port Harcourt.
The event, part of the Renewed Hope Initiative aimed at empowering women across Nigeria, was held at the EUI Centre in GRA, Port Harcourt. It was designed to distribute empowerment items to 500 women in the state, aligning with the First Lady's broader initiative to support 18,500 women nationwide.
However, the program faced an unexpected setback when a group of women, reportedly loyal to suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, staged a walkout. The protest was allegedly in response to perceived sidelining in the program's organization, with claims that loyalists of Minister Wike were favored in the event's proceedings.
Minister Wike condemned the walkout, describing it as a "show of shame" and an embarrassment to the people of Rivers State. He emphasized the importance of unity and respect, especially during initiatives aimed at uplifting the community.
The incident underscores the deepening political rift between Minister Wike and Governor Fubara, a situation that has previously led to interventions at the federal level to maintain stability in the state.
Despite the disruption, the First Lady's commitment to women's empowerment remains steadfast. Her Renewed Hope Initiative continues to make significant strides in supporting women across Nigeria, providing them with tools and resources to foster economic growth and self-reliance .
