Edo State Governor Okpebholo Abolishes New Traditional Councils, Restores Oba of Benin's Authority

In a significant policy reversal, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has abolished the traditional councils established in Edo South Senatorial District by the previous administration, reinstating the full statutory rights and financial entitlements of the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II.

The decision, announced on November 24, 2024, aims to restore the traditional governance structure that existed prior to the creation of the now-defunct councils. Governor Okpebholo's administration emphasized that this move is intended to "right the wrongs of the immediate-past administration and foster cordial relations between the Government and the people" [2] .

The previous establishment of multiple traditional councils across the seven local government areas in Edo South had led to tensions within the state's traditional institutions. By consolidating authority under the Benin Traditional Council, the governor seeks to reinforce the Oba's role as the singular traditional leader in the region.

In addition to restructuring the traditional councils, Governor Okpebholo has restored the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre to its original purpose, revoking its previous conversion into a motor park. The state government also expressed support for the Federal Government's Gazette recognizing the Oba of Benin as the custodian of repatriated artifacts looted during the 1897 Benin Massacre.

These actions have been met with approval from the Benin monarch and traditional chiefs, who view the restoration of the Oba's rights as a reaffirmation of the state's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.

As Edo State navigates the complexities of traditional governance and modern administration, the governor's recent decisions underscore a focus on unity and respect for longstanding cultural institutions.
