Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has advocated for a constitutional amendment that would introduce a single five- or six-year term for political office holders in Nigeria. He made this call at his private residence in Ikolaba, Ibadan, while receiving a delegation of well-wishers who paid him a Sallah homage following the Eid el-Kabir prayers. According to the Governor, such a system would minimize the distractions and pressures of re-election campaigns, allowing leaders to focus fully on governance and service delivery.
The Governor emphasized that Nigeria needs to re-evaluate its democratic structure to enhance effectiveness in leadership. He argued that the current system often results in politicians prioritizing their second-term ambitions over the welfare of the people. Makinde said a single-term arrangement would help reduce political tension, promote accountability, and lead to more focused and efficient administration. He also stated that he remains committed to fulfilling his duties and would not be distracted by speculations about his political future.
Earlier in the day, Muslims across Ibadan joined others around the world in observing the two-rakat Eid el-Kabir prayers, led by the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Abubakar Agbotomokekere, at the Agodi Eid Prayer Ground. The prayer session was attended by a government delegation led by the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal. The event drew thousands of worshippers and dignitaries who came together to celebrate the holy occasion.
Following the prayers, the state delegation visited Governor Makinde at his Ikolaba residence to offer prayers and extend festive greetings. The Governor used the opportunity to express his appreciation to the Muslim community and religious leaders for their consistent prayers and support, which he acknowledged as a significant factor in the success of his administration. He also thanked them for maintaining peace and promoting unity within the state.
Delivering the message of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the Otun Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, prayed for continued progress and prosperity under Governor Makinde’s leadership. He encouraged the people to support the administration’s vision for a better Oyo State. Special prayers were also offered by Professor Kamil Olosho for the Governor, the state, and the nation, asking for divine guidance, peace, and development.
Among the dignitaries present at the Eid ground and the subsequent homage visit were the PDP Deputy National Chairman (South), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja; the Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi; commissioners, local government chairmen, religious leaders, and politicians. Also in attendance were the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo, and Delta, Alhaji Daud Makanjuola, and some former deputy governors. The Deputy Governor, Barr. Bayo Lawal, urged the Muslim faithful to continue embracing the values of obedience, sacrifice, and trust in God, as taught by the Holy Quran and exemplified during Eid el-Kabir.
