Mongolia's Prime Minister Resigns Amid Public Outcry Over Son's Lavish Lifestyle

In a significant political development, Mongolian Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene tendered his resignation on June 3, 2025, following a parliamentary vote of no confidence and widespread public protests. The unrest was sparked by revelations of his 23-year-old son, Temuulen Luvsannamsrai's, extravagant lifestyle, which included luxury items such as designer handbags and a Mercedes-Benz vehicle.

The controversy began when Temuulen's fiancée shared images on social media showcasing high-end possessions, leading to public outrage in a country grappling with economic challenges. The posts, which were later deleted, fueled allegations that the Prime Minister's family was benefiting from wealth disproportionate to a civil servant's income.

Despite Oyun-Erdene's efforts to address the concerns, including submitting to an investigation by the Independent Authority Against Corruption, the State Great Khural (parliament) voted against him, with only 44 of the required 64 votes in his favor. He will serve as a caretaker Prime Minister until a successor is appointed within 30 days.
