The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has formally petitioned for constitutional amendments to establish Sharia Courts in Nigeria's South West and to designate Fridays as official work-free days, aiming to accommodate the religious practices of the Muslim population in the region.
During the South West Zonal Public Hearing on the Review of the 1999 Constitution held in Lagos, MURIC's Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, represented by Dr. Jamiu Busari, presented these demands to the Senate Committee on the Constitution Review. The organization emphasized that the absence of Sharia Courts in the South West, despite a significant Muslim demographic, undermines the legal and religious rights of Muslims in the area.
Prof. Akintola highlighted that prior to British colonization, Islamic legal systems were integral to the Yoruba legal structure. He argued that reinstating Sharia Courts would not only honor historical practices but also ensure that Muslims can adjudicate matters pertaining to their faith.
In addition to judicial reforms, MURIC advocated for Fridays to be recognized as public holidays nationwide, reflecting the significance of the day in Islamic worship. The organization pointed out that the current Saturday-Sunday weekend structure, introduced during colonial rule, predominantly favors Christian practices.
MURIC also raised concerns about the lack of official recognition for Islamic (Nikkah) marriage certificates in legal and bureaucratic processes. Prof. Akintola criticized the continued exclusion of Nikkah certificates, especially when Christian marriages conducted in churches or registries are widely accepted.
The group's proposals have elicited mixed reactions. While some Muslim organizations support the call for Sharia Courts and Friday holidays, various pan-Yoruba groups and traditional leaders have expressed opposition, citing concerns over potential religious divisions in the multi-faith region.
As the constitutional review process continues, the Senate Committee has assured all stakeholders that their submissions will be thoroughly considered, aiming to foster inclusivity and uphold the rights of all Nigerians
