Museveni Eyes Economic Transformation as He Secures 2026 Presidential Ticket

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, aged 80, has officially been endorsed by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) as its presidential candidate for the 2026 general elections. This move signals his intention to extend his nearly four-decade rule, which began in 1986.

Museveni, one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, announced a bold vision for Uganda’s future during his acceptance of the party’s nomination. He stated that the country must make a “qualitative leap” to achieve the status of a “high upper middle-income economy” in the near future.

“We are ready to drive Uganda into a new era of socio-economic transformation,” Museveni said, emphasizing the importance of industrialization, infrastructure development, and investment in human capital. “This is not just about growth, it’s about structural change and wealth creation.”

Under Museveni’s leadership, Uganda has seen macroeconomic stability, improvements in road networks, and increased access to electricity. However, critics point to growing inequality, high youth unemployment, and persistent concerns about governance and democratic freedoms.

Despite these concerns, Museveni maintains strong support within the NRM and among key rural constituencies. His long-term rule has brought political stability to the country, though opposition voices continue to call for leadership renewal.

As Uganda looks toward the 2026 polls, Museveni’s campaign is expected to focus on continuity, national security, regional integration, and the ambitious drive to elevate the country into a competitive global economy.
