Oyo Government Engages Student Leaders Amidst Polytechnic Ibadan Renaming Controversy

In response to escalating tensions over the recent renaming of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal convened a closed-door meeting with the institution's student union leaders on July 1, 2025. The meeting, held at the Conference Room of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), aimed to address the students' grievances following widespread protests that disrupted academic and administrative activities on campus.

The renaming of the institution to Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, in honor of the late former Governor and pioneer rector Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, was announced by Governor Seyi Makinde during a commendation service. However, the decision has been met with resistance from students, alumni, and various stakeholders who argue that the change undermines the institution's legacy and could negatively impact its global recognition.

During the meeting, Deputy Governor Lawal assured student representatives that their concerns would be communicated to Governor Makinde, who was currently unavailable. He emphasized the government's willingness to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve the issue amicably.

The student union, led by President Oladipupo Olamide, expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of consultation prior to the renaming and highlighted the potential challenges graduates might face in international academic and professional settings due to the name change.

As discussions continue, the Oyo State government faces mounting pressure to reconsider the renaming decision, with calls for alternative ways to honor Dr. Olunloyo's contributions without altering the institution's established identity.
