As Nigeria embarks on another phase of constitutional amendment, key stakeholders from the South-West geopolitical zone have made a bold and strategic push for significant structural reforms. During the South-West Zonal Public Hearing held in Lagos on Friday, prominent leaders, civil society representatives, and traditional rulers presented a united front on critical demands aimed at deepening federalism and improving governance.
Among the most prominent proposals was the *creation of five additional states* within the region. The delegates argued that this move would promote equity, improve administrative efficiency, and bring government closer to the people.
In addition, the region strongly advocated for *constitutional recognition and functional roles for traditional rulers*. This, they said, would not only preserve the cultural heritage of the Yoruba people but also strengthen community-based security, dispute resolution, and local development. “Our Obas are custodians of peace and order. They deserve a role in governance beyond ceremonial functions,” one delegate remarked.
Also high on the list was a demand for the *formal recognition of Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs)* created by the Lagos State Government in 2003. These LCDAs, though operational, are not yet listed in the constitution, which has implications for their access to federal allocations and institutional backing.
The participants also called for *the creation of additional local governments* across the region to reflect population growth and evolving administrative needs. This is expected to enhance grassroots participation in governance and promote equitable development.
The public hearing was part of the broader effort by the National Assembly to gather inputs from citizens across the six geopolitical zones on proposed amendments to the 1999 Constitution. South-West leaders made it clear that their demands were not just regional aspirations but steps toward building a more just, inclusive, and functional federation.
As constitutional reform debates intensify, all eyes will be on the National Assembly to see how it responds to these bold demands from one of the country’s most politically vibrant regions.
