2Baba’s Political Ambition: Why the Veteran Singer Isn’t Ruling Out a Future in Politics

Veteran Nigerian music icon Innocent Ujah Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba or 2Face, has once again affirmed that his long-held ambition to enter politics is still very much alive, rekindling conversations about the role entertainers might play in governance and civic leadership in Nigeria.

The revelation came during a recent appearance on the Mic On podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, where the legendary singer spoke candidly about his civic engagement efforts, his past grassroots campaigns, and his outlook on transitioning from entertainment to a more direct political role.

A Lifelong Civic Advocate with Political Aspirations

2Baba’s interest in politics isn’t a sudden idea born out of celebrity fame — it has been part of his journey for many years. His involvement in Nigeria’s civic space predates his recent statements, most notably through his “Vote No Fight” campaign, aimed at encouraging peaceful participation in elections and reducing electoral violence among Nigerian youths.

Rooted in his belief that true democracy can only flourish through responsible citizen participation rather than conflict, this campaign reflects a deeper understanding of the challenges facing Nigeria’s political culture. Across various states, these grassroots efforts focused on sensitising communities to embrace peaceful electoral processes rather than the violence that has too often marred Nigerian elections.

The singer confirmed to the podcast host that this commitment to civic engagement continues and forms the foundation of his political interest. When asked if his earlier political ambitions were still active, he emphatically said, “It’s definitely alive.”

From Musical Icon to Political Participant: A Strategic Shift

While many may still think of 2Baba primarily as one of Africa’s greatest musicians — with chart-topping hits that have given global recognition to Nigerian music — he sees his influence extending beyond entertainment. His song “African Queen” alone has played a pivotal role in amplifying Nigerian culture internationally, even being ranked as one of the top Afrobeats songs of all time by Billboard.

This global platform, he believes, is valuable not just for musical success but for advocating societal change, especially among young Nigerians who are increasingly disillusioned with the status quo. By leveraging his popularity, 2Baba hopes to mobilise a new wave of engaged and informed citizens, encouraging participation in democratic processes and advocating for accountability.

Political Readiness and Experience: A Growing Track Record

Interestingly, 2Baba has not just talked about political ambition — he’s also gained practical experience in public service. In April 2025, the Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, appointed him as Technical Adviser on Entertainment and Community Outreach, a role intended to harness his expertise in connecting with youth and promoting community initiatives.

This position, though not elective, provides him exposure to governance mechanisms and community development strategies — and reinforces his commitment to using his influence for national progress rather than solely personal fame. 2Baba himself has described the opportunity as a chance to contribute something meaningful to nation-building and state advancement.

Clarifying Political Identity and Partnerships

When probed about which political office he might pursue — whether legislative or executive, or whether it would be in a state like Lagos or elsewhere — 2Baba avoided committing to specifics, opting instead to keep Nigerians guessing with a hopeful “let’s keep our fingers crossed” response.

He also clarified his party affiliation status. Despite widespread speculation, he stated he is not a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, he acknowledged that his partner, Honourable Natasha Osawaru, is an active politician, showing that his personal and public lives are increasingly intertwined with governance and civic leadership circles.

What This Means for Nigeria’s Future

2Baba’s potential move into formal politics is symbolic of a larger trend across Africa, where entertainers, activists, and thought leaders are increasingly stepping into the political arena. His ascent from influential musician to community advocate and now possible political aspirant resonates with a generation eager for fresh leadership that understands grassroots issues, values youth participation, and champions peaceful democratic engagement.

Moreover, his continued emphasis on peaceful elections and his past campaigns like “Vote No Fight” demonstrate a commitment not just to holding office but to transforming Nigeria’s political culture — reducing violence, boosting voter education, and engaging citizens in meaningful dialogue about governance.

Conclusion: A New Chapter for 2Baba and Nigerian Politics

As Nigeria edges closer to future elections and grapples with the challenge of rejuvenating its democratic processes, voices like 2Baba’s — amplified by creativity, experience, and sincerity — could herald a fresh chapter in civic leadership.

Whether or not he eventually runs for office, 2Baba’s enduring belief that his dream of serving in a political capacity is “definitely alive” underscores the growing intersection between culture, social responsibility, and governance in Nigeria. For now, his journey from music legend to civic advocate keeps millions watching — not just for the next hit song, but for the possibility of a different kind of leadership emerging from the entertainment world.
