“Another Classroom Silenced”: Ogunbayo Condemns Murder of Abducted Oyo Teacher, Demands Urgent State Policing Reforms
The tragic killing of Mr. Michael Oyedokun, one of the teachers abducted from Community High School, Ahoro-Esinle in Oyo State, has continued to generate outrage and renewed calls for urgent security reforms across Nigeria. Reacting to the heartbreaking development, House of Representatives aspirant for Ibadan North-West and South-West Federal Constituency, Hon. Oluwatobi John Ogunbayo, condemned the incident and described it as a painful reflection of the worsening insecurity confronting rural communities and educational institutions in the country.
In a statement made available to journalists, Ogunbayo expressed deep sorrow over the death of the teacher, stressing that the continued targeting of schools, teachers, and innocent residents by criminal elements has become a disturbing national concern that must no longer be treated with levity.
According to him, the killing of Mr. Oyedokun is not only tragic but also a direct attack on education, community peace, and the future of the younger generation. He noted that schools are meant to serve as safe spaces for learning, growth, and development, not environments where students, teachers, and workers live in fear of abduction or violent attacks.
Ogunbayo lamented that many rural communities across Oyo State and Nigeria have become increasingly vulnerable due to weak grassroots security systems, inadequate surveillance, and slow emergency response structures. The federal lawmaker hopeful called on security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders, and all levels of government to intensify collaborative efforts aimed at strengthening local security architecture. He emphasized the urgent need to fast-track conversations around state policing and community-based security operations capable of responding swiftly to threats within local communities.
“We should fast-track the process of enhancing local security and state policing,” Ogunbayo stated, while advocating for stronger intelligence gathering mechanisms, improved surveillance technology, and increased support for community security networks, particularly in rural areas that are often exposed to criminal attacks.
His reaction comes amid growing nationwide debates over the effectiveness of Nigeria’s centralized policing system and increasing demands for state police structures to help address insecurity at the grassroots level. Security analysts and public affairs commentators have repeatedly argued that local policing could improve intelligence gathering and response time, especially in remote communities where federal security presence remains limited.
Over the years, cases of kidnappings and attacks on schools have continued to raise serious concerns among parents, educators, and civil society organizations.
