Ransom Bag Found in Seriki Fulani’s Kitchen as Ogun Police Intensify Crackdown on Kidnapping Syndicates
The Ogun State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on kidnapping syndicates operating across parts of the state following the arrest of a prominent Fulani community leader, Alhaji Muhammadu Abdullai, popularly known as the Seriki Fulani of Ijebu Ode, in connection with recent abduction cases in the Ijebu axis.
The 67-year-old cattle rearer and farmer was arrested alongside one of his sons after police operatives reportedly recovered a bag used for ransom collection inside his kitchen during a coordinated security operation.
Although Abdullai denied any involvement in kidnapping activities, he admitted that his son, Bala Muhammadu, had previously served a prison sentence for kidnapping and was recently released from a correctional facility.
The development comes amid growing concerns over rising incidents of abduction and insecurity in communities including Ijebu Ode, Imodi, Irewon, Iwode, Okun Owa, and surrounding areas in Ogun State.
According to police sources, operatives attached to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Ogun State Police Command, led by SP Bamidele Shirtu, had been investigating multiple kidnapping incidents when intelligence reports allegedly linked the crimes to Bala Muhammadu and his associates.
Investigators reportedly discovered that Bala had resumed criminal activities shortly after completing a five-year jail term for kidnapping-related offences.
During a raid on the family compound, police operatives allegedly recovered one of the bags used to transport ransom payments for a kidnapped victim. The bag was reportedly found in the kitchen area of the Seriki Fulani’s residence.
Security sources disclosed that Bala and two of his brothers narrowly escaped arrest after receiving advance warning about the presence of law enforcement officers in the area. They were said to have fled through nearby bush paths before the police arrived.
A police source familiar with the operation revealed that the authorities suspect the involvement of additional members of the family in the kidnapping network.
“After painstaking and intelligence-driven investigations, one of the bags used for ransom collection was recovered from the father’s kitchen. We also discovered that there was a noticeable rise in kidnapping incidents around the Ijebu axis shortly after Bala regained freedom from prison,” the source stated.
The source further alleged that other siblings identified as Ndaji and another unnamed brother are currently being tracked by security operatives.
Speaking to journalists after his arrest, Abdullai maintained his innocence, insisting that he had never participated in any kidnapping operation throughout his life.
“My name is Muhammadu Abdullai. I am a cattle rearer and farmer. I have lived in Yorubaland for over thirty years and I have four wives and thirty children here. I was honoured with the title of Seriki Fulani in Ijebu Ode by the late Awujale,” he said.
“I know Bala was once involved in kidnapping and that he went to prison for it. When he returned, he was seriously ill, and I personally took him to the hospital where he stayed for treatment for one month. I believed he had changed because he later returned to farming and cattle rearing.”
The community leader insisted that he never encouraged criminality and claimed he was unaware that his son had allegedly returned to kidnapping activities.
Also arrested during the operation was Bello Muhammadu, the eldest son in the family, who denied involvement in the alleged crimes.
Bello explained that he was working on the farm when police officers arrived at their residence and insisted that neither he nor his father participated in any criminal activity.
“If my father had known Bala returned to kidnapping, he would have personally stopped him. He does not support crime,” Bello stated.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has praised the efforts of its Anti-Kidnapping Unit for the successful operation.
The spokesperson for the command, CSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, credited the achievements recorded by the command to the support of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the strategic leadership of the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni.
According to Babaseyi, the operation demonstrates the commitment of the police to intelligence-led policing and the dismantling of criminal networks across Ogun State.
He assured residents that security operatives remain determined to track down all fleeing suspects and restore public confidence in the fight against violent crimes.
The police also urged members of the public to continue providing credible and timely information that could assist security agencies in combating kidnapping and other criminal activities across the state.
The incident has once again raised public concerns over the increasing sophistication of kidnapping syndicates in parts of Southwest Nigeria, as residents continue to demand stronger security measures and more coordinated intelligence operations to curb violent crimes.
