Makinde’s Presidential Declaration Sends One Message: APC Must Not Capture Oyo

'Reset Nigeria’ or Secure Oyo? Critics Question Makinde’s Real 2027 Agenda”

Governor Seyi Makinde has officially joined the race for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, a political development that is already generating widespread reactions across Oyo State and the wider South-West political landscape.

The declaration is being interpreted by many political observers as a strategic move aimed not only at pursuing national leadership but also at protecting and sustaining Makinde’s political legacy and structure in Oyo State beyond the end of his tenure as governor.

According to analysts monitoring the evolving political climate, the governor understands the importance of maintaining strong political control in Oyo ahead of the next general elections, especially as the influence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress continues to shape conversations ahead of 2027.

There are growing concerns within Makinde’s political camp that if Tinubu records a major presidential victory in Oyo State, candidates aligned with the governor for senatorial, House of Representatives, and other federal positions could face serious electoral setbacks.

Political insiders believe this reality is one of the major reasons behind the governor’s decision to officially enter the presidential contest, as part of efforts to strengthen his political structure and maintain relevance at both state and national levels.

Supporters of the governor have repeatedly pointed to Lagos as an example of how political continuity can sustain influence and long-term governance. According to them, Lagos has remained politically dominant since 1999 largely because of uninterrupted leadership and a consistent political structure, despite ongoing debates about whether the state’s massive revenues have fully translated into visible development for residents.

Many political commentators argue that continuity, more than anything else, has helped Lagos maintain institutional stability and electoral dominance over the years. They believe Makinde is now attempting to build a similar model in Oyo State by tightening his grip on the political structure ahead of 2027.

Sources within the movement also disclosed that supporters and loyalists are being encouraged to remain committed to the All Progressives Movement at the polls as part of a broader electoral strategy.

According to the argument within the camp, if the party fails to field a presidential candidate, voters could easily be swayed into voting for another major political party during the simultaneous conduct of presidential, senatorial, and House of Representatives elections. Political strategists believe the presence of a presidential candidate helps strengthen voter alignment across all other categories on election day.

Unlike previous election cycles where the APC maintained stronger control during federal contests in Oyo State, analysts say Makinde is now moving decisively to consolidate his influence without compromise ahead of the next electoral battle.

Speaking during his declaration, Makinde reportedly emphasized that “it is time to reset Nigeria,” a statement many observers believe will form the central message of his emerging national campaign.

With political activities already gathering momentum ahead of 2027, many stakeholders now see Oyo State as one of the most critical battlegrounds that could shape the future political direction of the South-West and influence the broader national power equation in the coming elections.
