Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has met with the families of victims abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of the state, assuring them that his administration is fully committed to securing the safe release of all those held captive.
The emotional meeting, which took place at the open field of Ahoro Esiele LA Basic School, brought together grieving family members, traditional leaders, community stakeholders, residents, and government officials amid growing concerns over insecurity in parts of the state.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Makinde appealed for patience, understanding, and cooperation from the affected families and residents, stressing that security agencies and the state government are working relentlessly to ensure the abductees regain their freedom safely.
The governor acknowledged the pain, fear, and uncertainty currently being experienced by the victims’ relatives, noting that no amount of words could fully heal the emotional trauma caused by the unfortunate incident. However, he assured the community that the government would push beyond every possible limit to achieve a successful rescue operation.
Makinde disclosed that since the abduction occurred, he has been holding strategic security meetings twice daily with relevant agencies and stakeholders involved in the rescue efforts. According to him, coordinated intelligence gathering and security operations are ongoing to track down the abductors and rescue the victims unharmed.
He further revealed that operatives of the Western Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, have continued to make significant sacrifices in the fight against insecurity across Oyo State. The governor stated that nearly 200 Amotekun personnel have lost their lives while combating criminal activities and protecting residents in various parts of the state.
The governor used the opportunity to commend the courage and dedication of security operatives working tirelessly to maintain peace and security, particularly in rural communities vulnerable to attacks and kidnappings.
Makinde also expressed deep sympathy with the affected families, stating that he personally shares in their grief and concerns over the traumatic incident. While acknowledging that kidnappers sometimes claim to have grievances or demands, the governor maintained that abducting innocent citizens, including schoolchildren and teachers, remains cruel, unacceptable, and entirely inhumane.
The abduction has continued to generate widespread concern across Oyo State, especially due to reports that some of the victims include schoolchildren and education workers. Community members have since intensified calls for stronger security presence and improved protection for rural communities.
During the gathering, emotions ran high as some relatives of the victims passionately appealed to the governor to intensify efforts toward the immediate rescue of their loved ones.
Among those who spoke was Professor Wole Alamu, husband of the abducted school principal, Mrs. Funmilayo Ojo. He disclosed that his daughter-in-law and four grandchildren are also among those currently in captivity. Fighting back emotions, Professor Alamu pleaded with the governor and security agencies not to relent until all victims are safely reunited with their families.
Similarly, Mr. Aliu Saidi, a relative of one of the abducted victims, called on the state government to deploy every available resource toward ensuring the victims’ safe return. He described the situation as heartbreaking and appealed for urgent intervention to prevent further emotional and psychological suffering for the families.
Following the public address, Governor Makinde proceeded to hold a brief private meeting with families of the abducted pupils and teachers. Sources at the meeting disclosed that discussions focused on ongoing rescue operations, security strategies, and reassurance from the government regarding its unwavering commitment to securing the victims’ freedom.
The latest incident has once again highlighted the growing security challenges facing several communities across Nigeria, with increasing concerns over kidnappings, attacks on schools, and criminal activities in rural areas. Security analysts have repeatedly emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between local security outfits, intelligence agencies, and community leaders to effectively combat emerging threats.
Despite the tension surrounding the incident, residents expressed hope following the governor’s visit and renewed assurances that all possible measures are being taken to bring the abducted victims home safely.
For many of the affected families, however, the wait remains painful as they continue to pray and hope for positive news regarding the safe return of their loved ones.
