The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening security across the state following the inauguration and commissioning of the new Violent Crimes Response Unit office by the Oyo State Police Command.
Speaking during the official event earlier today, Governor Makinde described the establishment of the specialized security unit as a timely and strategic intervention aimed at improving the security architecture of Oyo State amid growing concerns over violent crimes, kidnappings, and insecurity in parts of Nigeria.
According to the governor, the new Violent Crimes Response Unit will enhance the operational capacity of law enforcement agencies in combating criminal activities and responding swiftly to emergencies across the state. He stressed that ensuring the safety of lives and property remains one of the top priorities of his administration.
Makinde noted that peace and security are critical foundations for economic growth, education, investment, and social stability, adding that the government will continue to collaborate closely with security agencies to maintain law and order throughout the state.
“Today’s inauguration represents another important step in our continuous effort to secure Oyo State and ensure that our people can live, work, and raise their families in peace without fear,” the governor stated during his remarks.
The governor’s comments come amid heightened tension following the painful abduction incident involving students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, which reportedly occurred yesterday and has sparked concern among residents and stakeholders across the state.
Addressing the tragic development, Governor Makinde disclosed that the state government is already working closely with relevant security agencies to obtain full clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure that necessary actions are taken swiftly.
He expressed deep sympathy to the affected families, particularly those who reportedly lost loved ones during the unfortunate attack.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families that have lost their loved ones. May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” he said solemnly.
The governor further emphasized that the incident serves as a painful reminder that security challenges must never be ignored or taken lightly by any government. According to him, authorities must remain proactive, vigilant, and highly responsive in tackling emerging threats before they escalate.
Security experts have consistently highlighted the importance of specialized response units in addressing violent crimes, especially in rapidly growing urban and semi-urban communities. Analysts believe that improved coordination between the police, local intelligence networks, and community stakeholders remains essential in combating insecurity effectively.
Residents and political observers have also commended the Oyo State Government’s continued investment in security infrastructure, noting that enhanced collaboration between the government and security agencies could help strengthen public confidence and reduce criminal activities across the state.
In recent years, Oyo State has continued to witness increased government interventions in security operations, including support for law enforcement agencies with operational vehicles, communication gadgets, logistics support, and intelligence-sharing mechanisms.
Governor Makinde reiterated that while security agencies have a constitutional responsibility to protect citizens, government support and community cooperation remain vital in achieving sustainable peace and stability.
He urged residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with security operatives as investigations into the Oriire incident continue.
The inauguration of the Violent Crimes Response Unit office is expected to further improve emergency response capabilities and strengthen coordinated efforts against kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, and other violent crimes within Oyo State and its surrounding communities.
As concerns over insecurity continue to dominate national conversations across Nigeria, many residents hope that proactive measures such as this will help restore confidence and provide safer environments for citizens to thrive.
