As Nigerians reflect on the significance of June 18 in the nation's democratic history, aspirant for the House of Representatives, Hon. Oluwatobi John Ogunbayo (OJO), has called on citizens, especially the people of Ibadan North-West and Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency, to remain committed to the ideals of democracy, good governance, accountability, and active civic participation.
June 18 occupies a special place in Nigeria's political evolution. On this day in 1998, following the death of former Head of State General Sani Abacha, General Abdulsalami Abubakar announced a transition programme that eventually paved the way for Nigeria's return to democratic governance in 1999. That historic decision marked the beginning of the Fourth Republic and restored the hopes of millions of Nigerians who longed for freedom, representation, and constitutional rule.
According to Hon. Oluwatobi John Ogunbayo (OJO), the occasion serves as a reminder that democracy is not merely a system of government but a continuous journey that requires responsible leadership and active engagement from the people.
"Today, we remember a defining moment in our national history when Nigeria chose the path of democracy and constitutional governance. The sacrifices of our heroes, pro-democracy activists, statesmen, and ordinary citizens who fought for democratic freedoms must never be forgotten. Their courage laid the foundation upon which our nation continues to build," OJO stated.
The youthful politician emphasized that democracy thrives when leaders remain accountable to the people and when public office is viewed as a platform for service rather than personal gain. He noted that the aspirations of the people of Ibadan North-West and Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency can only be achieved through purposeful representation, inclusive governance, and sustainable development policies that address the real needs of the grassroots.
As an emerging political voice with a strong passion for community development, youth empowerment, economic advancement, educational opportunities, and improved social welfare, OJO reiterated his commitment to championing policies that will enhance the quality of life of constituents and ensure that the dividends of democracy are felt across every ward and community within the federal constituency.
He stressed that the future of Nigeria depends on a new generation of leaders who are prepared to listen, learn, innovate, and place the interests of the people above all other considerations.
"The lessons of June 18 remind us that democratic progress is achieved through vision, sacrifice, resilience, and collective responsibility. As we continue our journey toward a more prosperous Nigeria, we must strengthen our democratic institutions, promote transparency, encourage citizen participation, and ensure that leadership remains accountable to the people."
Hon. Ogunbayo further urged young people to become active participants in the democratic process, noting that the future belongs to those who are willing to contribute positively to nation-building through constructive engagement, leadership, and service.
He reaffirmed his belief that Ibadan North-West and Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency possess enormous human and economic potential that can be unlocked through effective legislative representation, strategic partnerships, and people-centered governance.
As Nigeria continues to navigate the challenges and opportunities of democratic governance, OJO expressed optimism that the nation can achieve greater political stability, economic prosperity, and social progress when leaders and citizens work together toward shared goals.
Quoting renowned historian David McCullough, he concluded:
"History is a guide to navigation in perilous times."
"Indeed, our history provides valuable lessons for the future. By learning from our past and remaining committed to democratic principles, we can build a stronger constituency, a stronger Oyo State, and a stronger Nigeria for generations to come."
Signed:
Hon. Oluwatobi John Ogunbayo (OJO)
