As Nigerians reflect on significant milestones in our democratic history, June 8 remains a date of profound political importance. It marks the anniversary of the death of former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, on June 8, 1998—an event that altered the trajectory of Nigeria's political landscape and ultimately paved the way for the return of democratic governance.
Today, as we continue to strengthen our democratic institutions and deepen the principles of accountability, representation, and good governance, it is important to remember the lessons of history and recommit ourselves to the ideals upon which our democracy stands.
In a goodwill message to the people of Ibadan North-West and Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency, Hon. Oluwatobi John Ogunbayo (OJO), a leading aspirant for the House of Representatives, emphasized the importance of learning from Nigeria's political evolution while building a future anchored on inclusive development and people-centered leadership.
According to OJO, the passing of General Sani Abacha in 1998 remains one of the most consequential moments in modern Nigerian history because it opened the door to the democratic transition that birthed the Fourth Republic in 1999—a republic under which Nigeria continues to operate today.
"History teaches us that democracy is not sustained merely by elections but by the collective commitment of leaders and citizens to justice, accountability, transparency, and service. The journey towards national greatness requires continuous sacrifice, patriotism, and responsible leadership," he stated.
The aspiring federal lawmaker noted that more than two decades after Nigeria's return to civilian rule, the nation must continue to strengthen democratic values, encourage youth participation in governance, and promote policies that improve the welfare of ordinary citizens.
He stressed that sustainable development can only be achieved when elected representatives remain accessible to the people, understand their challenges, and champion legislation that addresses pressing concerns such as unemployment, economic empowerment, education, healthcare, infrastructure, security, and social inclusion.
For the people of Ibadan North-West and Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency, OJO reaffirmed his commitment to a new era of responsive representation, effective constituency engagement, and developmental advocacy that prioritizes the needs of every community.
"Our constituency deserves a voice that listens, understands, and acts. We deserve representation that goes beyond political promises and delivers measurable impact. The future belongs to leaders who are prepared to serve selflessly and work collaboratively with the people to achieve shared prosperity," he remarked.
Hon. Ogunbayo further called on residents, community leaders, youths, women, professionals, artisans, and stakeholders across the constituency to remain actively involved in the democratic process and contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
