The Abacha name has returned to the centre of political attention in Kano State after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) affirmed Muhammad Sani Abacha, son of the late former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, as its candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
Muhammad Abacha’s emergence represents another significant chapter in his political journey and places the name of one of Nigeria’s most recognisable political families firmly back in the Kano political conversation.
The development followed the withdrawal of the PDP’s previously selected governorship candidate, Muhammad Bello Dalha, after consultations involving party stakeholders in Kano and at the party’s national level in Abuja. The withdrawal created the need for the party to conduct a replacement process in accordance with its rules and applicable electoral requirements.
At an expanded meeting of the Kano State PDP executive committee on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, the party formally conducted the replacement governorship primary and affirmed Muhammad Abacha as its new flag bearer.
Kano PDP Chairman, Dr Bello Gambo-Bichi, said the replacement exercise followed the withdrawal of the earlier candidate and was conducted in line with the party’s constitution, electoral regulations and relevant provisions of the law. The process was reportedly witnessed by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The chairman of the electoral panel, Dr Abba Abdullahi, subsequently declared Abacha the winner of the replacement primary. He stated that the exercise complied with the PDP’s guidelines and applicable electoral regulations and that Abacha fulfilled the requirements for nomination. His candidacy, however, remains subject to the statutory processes and scrutiny required by the relevant electoral authorities.
The PDP also announced Alhaji Yusuf Ado-Kibiya, a former party chairman and former Commissioner for Land and Agriculture in Kano State, as Abacha’s running mate.
According to the party leadership, the choice of Kibiya was part of a broader reconciliation effort aimed at resolving internal disagreements between different groups within the Kano PDP. The party said the reconciliation also resulted in changes to some of its National Assembly and State House of Assembly candidates.
For Muhammad Abacha, the latest development is not his first attempt at securing the Kano governorship ticket. He previously contested the position under the PDP during the 2023 election cycle. Reports from that election indicate that he finished third in the governorship contest.
His latest emergence therefore marks a return to the political stage ahead of the 2027 elections, while simultaneously reviving public interest in the Abacha political legacy.
General Sani Abacha, Muhammad’s father, served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1993 until his death in 1998. His administration remains a major and often debated chapter in Nigeria’s political history.
With Muhammad Abacha now carrying the PDP flag in Kano, the Abacha name once again becomes part of the state’s unfolding political calculations. His emergence also adds another layer to what is expected to be a closely watched political contest as parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
For the PDP, the immediate challenge will be maintaining the reconciliation achieved among its various factions and building organisational unity around its newly affirmed candidate. For Abacha himself, the task is to translate his political pedigree and previous electoral experience into a fresh campaign capable of connecting with voters across Kano State.
The development has undoubtedly brought the Abacha name back into the political spotlight—but the eventual significance of that return will ultimately be determined by the electorate and the democratic process.
