Former First Lady, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, has paid a visit to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Abuja, in an engagement Atiku described as “warm and deeply appreciated.”
Atiku disclosed the meeting in a statement shared on his social media platforms on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. While neither Aisha Buhari nor Atiku publicly disclosed the specific purpose of the visit or the details of their private discussions, the encounter comes at a time of heightened political activity ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
According to Atiku, the visit went beyond the courtesies of a personal engagement and served as a reminder of the responsibility facing everyone committed to building a better Nigeria. He emphasised that the welfare, dignity and future of ordinary Nigerians should remain at the centre of national priorities.
“Today, I was delighted to receive former First Lady, H.E. Aisha Buhari. Her visit was warm and deeply appreciated,” Atiku stated.
He added that the meeting highlighted the need for those seeking a better Nigeria to remain focused on the challenges confronting citizens and the need to improve their quality of life.
Atiku Highlights Rising Cost of Living
The former Vice President used the occasion to draw attention to the economic pressures facing households across the country.
He noted that families are increasingly being stretched by the rising cost of essential goods and services, specifically identifying food, transportation, education, healthcare and other basic necessities.
“Across our country, families are being stretched by the rising cost of food, transport, education, healthcare and other basic necessities,” Atiku said.
He argued that Nigerians deserve an economy capable of rewarding hard work, restoring opportunities and enabling families to live with dignity and hope.
His comments come amid continued national debate over the cost of living, household purchasing power and the broader impact of economic policies on individuals, families and businesses.
Atiku said addressing these challenges would require collective efforts aimed at reducing the economic burden on Nigerians while rebuilding confidence in the country's future.
A Meeting Amid 2027 Political Activity
The meeting has attracted attention partly because of its timing. Atiku is now the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, while Aisha Buhari remains a prominent former First Lady and the widow of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Reports indicate that Aisha was accompanied by one of her daughters and associates during the visit.
However, available reports have not established that the visit was connected to any specific political agreement, endorsement or arrangement. The stated purpose and substance of their private discussions have not been publicly disclosed.
For Atiku, however, the encounter provided an opportunity to reiterate his broader message about the need to place citizens at the heart of national decision-making.
“That is the Nigeria we must build together, a country that works for its people again,” he said.
He concluded with a call for collective action to reduce the pressures confronting Nigerians and improve economic prospects.
“We must ease the burden, restore hope and Make Nigeria Affordable Again,” Atiku said.
The visit therefore comes at an important moment in Nigeria's political calendar, while the central issues raised by Atiku — affordability, economic opportunity, household welfare and the future of ordinary Nigerians — remain prominent subjects in the country's ongoing national conversation.
