HIJACKING SCARE: Dubai–Tel Aviv Flight Carrying About 180 Passengers Diverts to Saudi Arabia After Emergency Alert

A developing aviation incident involving a Flydubai passenger aircraft travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv triggered a major security response on Wednesday, September 30, after the aircraft transmitted emergency signals and unexpectedly diverted toward Saudi Arabia.

The flight, identified as Flydubai Flight FZ1073, was carrying approximately 174–180 passengers, according to reports from multiple news organisations. The aircraft was operating a scheduled route from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv when the emergency unfolded.

Initial reports sparked fears that the aircraft may have been hijacked. Flight-tracking data showed the Boeing 737 transmitting the international emergency code 7700, which indicates a general emergency. It subsequently transmitted 7500, a code associated with unlawful interference or a possible hijacking.

The unusual signals and change in flight path prompted an immediate Israeli security response. Reports indicated that Israeli Air Force fighter jets were scrambled toward the aircraft while senior Israeli officials assessed the situation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz were also reported to have held emergency consultations over the incident.

The aircraft subsequently diverted toward northwestern Saudi Arabia and landed safely at Tabuk Airport, rather than continuing to Tel Aviv. The unexpected landing was particularly notable because Israel and Saudi Arabia do not maintain formal diplomatic relations, adding another layer of complexity to arrangements for passengers who needed to return to Israel.

However, as more information emerged, the initial reports of a hijacking were challenged.

The Israeli Prime Minister's Office later said the incident was not believed to have been a hijacking. According to Israeli officials cited by Reuters, the emergency signals were apparently connected to a physical altercation between the two pilots while the aircraft was in flight. Flydubai confirmed that an incident occurred onboard and that the aircraft diverted safely to Tabuk. All passengers were reported safe and accounted for.

Other reports also cited passengers describing screams and a violent confrontation in the cockpit, although the precise circumstances surrounding the altercation remained under investigation.

The incident nevertheless demonstrates how quickly an unexplained emergency signal aboard a commercial aircraft can trigger a major military and aviation response. A transponder code associated with possible unlawful interference is treated extremely seriously, particularly when the aircraft changes course unexpectedly and communications or tracking information become uncertain.

For now, the key confirmed development is that the Flydubai aircraft landed safely in Saudi Arabia and the passengers were reported safe. The initial claim that the plane had been hijacked should therefore be treated as unconfirmed and subsequently disputed by Israeli authorities.

Further details are expected as Israeli, Saudi and aviation authorities investigate what happened inside the cockpit and why the aircraft transmitted the emergency signals.

This is a developing story. Updates will follow as more verified information becomes available.
