Nollywood Makes Global History as ‘Black Market’ Draws 51,000 Viewers for Record-Breaking TBS Screening
Nollywood has achieved another remarkable milestone on the global entertainment stage after Black Market, a Nigerian crime thriller, drew more than 51,000 viewers to Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos, for what has now been recognised as a Guinness World Records-breaking film screening.
The historic event took place on Saturday, September 26, 2026, turning the iconic Lagos venue into an enormous open-air cinema as thousands of Nigerians gathered to witness the highly anticipated premiere. Guinness World Records confirmed 51,000 viewers as the qualifying attendance, making the screening the largest audience gathered for a movie screening at a single location.
The achievement surpassed the previous benchmark of 43,624 people, established in 2015 when the Filipino film Felix Manalo was screened at the Philippine Arena in the Philippines. The producers of Black Market had initially set a target of 50,000 simultaneous viewers as part of their record attempt.
Interestingly, the attendance figure announced at the venue was higher. Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat reportedly announced that about 64,000 people attended the event. However, Guinness World Records used a qualifying figure of 51,000, based on viewers who remained for the required duration of the screening—from the beginning to the end of the movie.
The scale of the gathering was evident long before the film began. Gates opened at about 2 p.m., followed by a red-carpet session around 3 p.m., while the main screening was scheduled for the evening. Reports indicated that long queues formed around TBS as movie lovers arrived for the unprecedented cinematic experience. Music, food, games and other entertainment activities were also incorporated into the event.
Black Market is a production involving Rixel Studios, FilmOne Studios and Signet Ring Studios, with Switch Visuals Production also involved in the record-breaking event. The film was directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay and written by Gimsay and Abdul Tijani-Ahmed. Its ensemble cast includes Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Lateef Adedimeji, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Ibrahim Yekini, Uzor Arukwe and other Nigerian actors.
The crime thriller centres on five women operating a cross-border smuggling business against the backdrop of fuel scarcity and economic pressure. Their operation takes a dangerous turn after the daughter of one of the women is kidnapped, forcing the characters into a high-stakes struggle involving survival, loyalty and betrayal.
The Guinness World Records attempt was not an afterthought. The filmmakers had reportedly conceived the idea from the early stages of the project, with the objective of transforming the traditional movie premiere into a major cultural event capable of putting Nigerian cinema before a global audience.
The successful screening therefore represents more than a record for Black Market. It demonstrates the ability of Nollywood to mobilise an extraordinary physical audience around a locally produced story and create large-scale entertainment experiences outside conventional cinema halls.
From Lagos to the world, 51,000-plus Nigerians gathered around one screen, one story and one extraordinary night—giving Nollywood another place in the global record books.
