A fresh political controversy has emerged in Osun State following reports of alleged disagreements surrounding Governor Ademola Adeleke’s political understanding with the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reports circulating in political circles suggest that demands may have emerged from certain APC interests for the sharing of key political positions, including Senate and House of Representatives seats, as part of efforts to resolve the lingering dispute over Osun State's withheld local government allocations.
The development has reportedly placed Governor Adeleke in a difficult political position, particularly following his public declaration of support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
The controversy comes against the backdrop of the prolonged local government crisis in Osun, which has involved competing claims over the legitimate leadership of local councils and the control of their statutory allocations. Governor Adeleke has repeatedly demanded the release of funds reportedly exceeding ₦130 billion, arguing that their continued withholding has affected grassroots administration and service delivery.
However, the governor has recently moved to distance himself from reports suggesting that his political understanding with the APC involves sharing legislative and local government positions.
In a statement issued on October 28, 2026, through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke dismissed the alleged arrangement as fabricated, insisting that his understanding with the APC-aligned coalition was limited to supporting President Tinubu's re-election.
He maintained that he would campaign for Accord candidates contesting Senate, House of Representatives and Osun State House of Assembly seats in 2027, stressing that those positions should remain open to electoral competition.
The governor also explained that discussions concerning the local government crisis were intended to protect the interests of both APC chairmen and elected PDP chairmen and councillors while restoring grassroots governance.
Nevertheless, the allegations have continued to generate political reactions, with concerns reportedly being raised in some quarters over the possibility of compromising Osun's political interests in the process of resolving the local government dispute.
The reported position of some political stakeholders that Osun should not be surrendered to political bargaining has further intensified the debate. However, claims of a formal APC demand for specific legislative seats have not been independently established, and Adeleke has publicly denied entering into such an agreement.
THE POLITICAL QUESTION
Governor Adeleke's situation raises important questions about the limits of political alliances, the protection of party interests and the responsibility of elected leaders to their constituents.
Supporting a presidential candidate in 2027 does not automatically translate into surrendering other electoral positions or negotiating away the political choices of the people.
Ultimately, the resolution of Osun's local government crisis should prioritise constitutional provisions, judicial decisions, the rule of law and the interests of residents rather than unverified political bargaining.
MY TAKE: Political negotiations should never become an excuse for compromising the interests of the people. Any leader entering an alliance must understand that political loyalty has its limits, particularly when the future of an entire state is involved.
