BREAKING: IGP Disu Approves Fresh Investigation Into Mohbad’s Death as Aloba Family Renews Fight for Answers

The family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has secured approval from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for a fresh and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.

The development was disclosed by the family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, in a statement dated September 29, 2026, amid renewed public attention to the circumstances surrounding the death of the 27-year-old artiste.

According to the lawyer, the Aloba family submitted its petition directly to the Inspector-General of Police on April 14, 2026, while the petition was formally received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7, 2026. The petition reportedly raised concerns about inconsistencies in the earlier investigative process and requested a comprehensive forensic reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.

Following its approval, the petition was forwarded to the Lagos State Police Command for immediate action. The family was subsequently informed that the matter had been assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau, who are now handling the fresh investigative process.

The family’s representative has reportedly been invited and has already engaged with the new team of investigators. The family also said it has continued to cooperate with the authorities and provide information, documents, witnesses and other relevant materials that could assist investigators in establishing the facts.

Fresh Probe Separate From Recent Court Case

The latest development comes shortly after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a separate suit seeking to compel the police to reopen investigations into Mohbad’s death.

The Aloba family has, however, clarified that the court case was not instituted by the family and was separate from the petition it submitted to the Inspector-General of Police.

The family therefore urged the public not to interpret the dismissal of that case as an end to the police investigation arising from its own petition. The separate suit was filed by the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation, which had sought judicial intervention to compel a fresh investigation. The court dismissed the suit on September 25, 2026.

The distinction is significant because the family maintains that the police re-investigation arising from its petition remains active despite the court ruling.

Questions Surrounding Mohbad’s Death Remain

Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27, triggering widespread public concern and demands for answers. His remains were subsequently exhumed for an autopsy.

Earlier reporting on the autopsy noted that pathologists were unable to conclusively determine the cause of death because of the advanced state of decomposition.

The circumstances surrounding the singer’s final hours have continued to generate legal, investigative and public controversy, with different proceedings and claims emerging since his death.

The renewed investigation now places the responsibility on the police to examine the available evidence, relevant witnesses, documents and circumstances surrounding the case and determine what the evidence establishes.

The Aloba family has urged the police to approach the process with diligence, independence and professionalism, while examining all relevant persons and circumstances.

Importantly, the family’s legal representatives have stressed that they are not seeking to prejudge the outcome of the investigation or conduct what they described as a “trial by media”. Rather, they want a credible, comprehensive and transparent process capable of establishing the facts.

With the petition now approved and the Special Enquiry Bureau reportedly engaged, attention will turn to the conduct and findings of the fresh investigation.

For the Aloba family, however, the central demand remains unchanged: clarity, accountability and answers surrounding the death of Mohbad.
