Sometimes, beyond politics, political arguments and public controversies, there are moments that remind the world of the human responsibility that comes with leadership. The story of 95-year-old Malphine Fogel and her son, Marc Fogel, is one such moment.
It is a story of a mother's desperate hope, a promise made by Donald Trump and the emotional reunion of a family separated by years of imprisonment.
Malphine Fogel was 95 years old when she got an opportunity to personally appeal to Donald Trump for help in securing the release of her son, Marc, an American schoolteacher who had been detained in Russia since August 2021.
Marc had been arrested by Russian authorities over the possession of medically prescribed marijuana while returning to Russia from the United States. He was subsequently sentenced to 14 years in a Russian penal colony, leaving his family devastated and his elderly mother desperately hoping that she would live long enough to see him return home.
During a meeting with Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024, Malphine made her appeal. She explained her son's predicament and asked Trump whether he would help secure his freedom if elected president.
Trump listened to her concerns and made a commitment that would later become a significant part of Marc's journey home.
He promised the elderly mother that he would work to bring her son back.
For Malphine, it was more than a political assurance. It was a renewed reason to hope that the son she had spent years praying for would eventually return to her embrace.
And then, on February 11, 2025, the long-awaited breakthrough finally came.
After more than three years in Russian detention, Marc Fogel was released following diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Russia. The operation involved Trump's administration, with Special Envoy Steve Witkoff playing a key role in securing the arrangement.
Marc was flown back to the United States, where he was welcomed at the White House by President Donald Trump.
With an American flag draped around his shoulders, the 63-year-old teacher arrived to an emotional reception. Trump personally greeted him, welcomed him home and acknowledged the promise he had made to Marc's 95-year-old mother.
During their meeting, Trump recalled his encounter with Malphine, saying:
"She's 95 years old. And I said, 'We'll get him out.' And we got him out pretty quickly."
Marc, visibly emotional, expressed gratitude to Trump and the people who worked towards his release, describing the President as a hero.
He also acknowledged the role of his mother, whose determination to secure his freedom had never wavered.
Trump subsequently took Marc on a tour of the Lincoln Bedroom, making the occasion even more memorable.
The release was not simply the result of one person's intervention. It involved diplomatic engagement, negotiations and cooperation between several officials and parties. Nevertheless, Trump's personal commitment to Malphine and his administration's role in securing Marc's return made the development particularly significant.
And that is what makes this story worth remembering.
It reminds us that leadership is not measured exclusively by political speeches, campaign promises, public appearances or the ability to command attention. Sometimes, its impact is reflected in the lives of ordinary people whose desperate circumstances require the attention of those in positions of authority.
Imagine being 95 years old, uncertain whether you will ever see your son again, and then receiving the news that he is finally coming home.
Imagine the relief, the tears, the gratitude and the overwhelming joy of knowing that a prayer you have carried for years has finally received an answer.
This story also offers an opportunity to reflect on the human side of Donald Trump, beyond the political controversies, criticism, disagreements and headlines that frequently dominate public conversations about him.
One can disagree with a politician's policies, question his decisions and hold him accountable while still acknowledging an action that brings relief and happiness to a family.
In this particular instance, a 95-year-old mother made a desperate appeal, a promise was given, and her son eventually returned home.
That is a moment worth recognising.
So, what do you think?
Can we acknowledge and appreciate a positive action by a political leader even when we disagree with many other things about him?
For Malphine Fogel, the most important thing was never the politics. It was getting her son back.
And for a mother who had waited so long, there could hardly have been a more precious homecoming.
