ESTHER KOLAWOLE STUNS OLYMPIC MEDALLIST GRACE BULLEN IN EPIC 12–11 COMEBACK VICTORY AT 2026 WORLD WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Nigeria’s Esther Kolawole has delivered one of the most remarkable performances at the 2026 World Wrestling Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, staging an incredible comeback to defeat Norway’s Olympic medallist Grace Bullen in a thrilling encounter.

The 24-year-old Nigerian wrestler, who is a five-time African champion, demonstrated extraordinary determination, resilience and fighting spirit to overturn a seemingly impossible 10–3 deficit and secure a dramatic 12–11 victory.

The contest, which took place on October 28, 2026, during the women's freestyle competition, was one of the most exciting bouts of the championship.

Bullen initially appeared to have the contest under control after opening the scoring with a four-point headlock. Kolawole responded with a reversal and a roll, reducing the deficit to 4–3.

However, the Norwegian wrestler regained her advantage in the second period with another four-point move, followed by a step-out point. An unsuccessful challenge further extended her lead to 10–3, leaving the Nigerian with a mountain to climb.

But Kolawole refused to surrender.

With determination and remarkable composure, she launched a stunning comeback, executing two consecutive four-point attacks to turn the contest around and take an 11–10 lead with just 20 seconds remaining.

The final seconds produced even more drama as Bullen desperately searched for the points needed to reclaim the advantage. Both wrestlers went over the boundary during the closing exchange, with Bullen initially awarded a step-out point.

Norway challenged the decision, hoping to secure an additional point, but the review was unsuccessful. The rejected challenge awarded Kolawole the decisive additional point, confirming her extraordinary 12–11 victory.

According to the official report by United World Wrestling (UWW), the contest featured at least four spectacular four-point throws, making it one of the standout encounters of the day's competition.

The victory secured Kolawole's progression into the semifinal stage, further highlighting Nigeria's growing presence on the international wrestling scene.

Her emotional reaction after the contest, including tears of joy, reflected the magnitude of the achievement and the determination required to overcome such a formidable opponent.

Although Bullen boasts an impressive international record, including an Olympic bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Games, Kolawole proved that determination and courage can make the difference even against highly decorated opponents.

Kolawole's performance was particularly significant for Nigerian wrestling, as it demonstrated the country's ability to compete against some of the world's most accomplished athletes.

She subsequently finished fifth in the 62kg category after losing her bronze-medal contest to Russia's Amina Tandelova, who secured a 7–3 victory. Nevertheless, her remarkable comeback against Bullen remains one of the memorable moments of Nigeria's campaign.

For Nigerian sports fans, Esther Kolawole's performance is a reminder of the resilience, talent and fighting spirit of the nation's athletes.

Her victory against an Olympic medallist is not just another wrestling result; it is a powerful demonstration of what Nigerian athletes can achieve when determination meets opportunity.

Nigeria has every reason to celebrate Esther Kolawole! 🇳🇬
