Riyadh Airport Attack Kills 12, Injures 309 as Trump Considers Joining Saudi Arabia’s Fight Against Houthis

The United States is considering possible military involvement in Saudi Arabia’s fight against Yemen’s Houthi rebels following a deadly attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh that killed at least 12 people, including an American citizen, and injured 309 others.

The attack, which occurred on Saturday, October 10, has intensified concerns about the expanding conflict in the Middle East and raised questions about Washington’s next move as American citizens and other foreign nationals become victims of the violence.

According to Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation, the fatalities included four Saudi nationals, two Bangladeshis, and one citizen each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan. Several of the 309 injured people were reportedly in critical condition and were receiving medical treatment at hospitals across Riyadh.

The incident represents a significant escalation in attacks against Saudi Arabia’s civilian aviation infrastructure, with the kingdom facing mounting security challenges amid renewed fighting involving Houthi forces in neighbouring Yemen.

Trump Weighs Possible US Military Involvement

US President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington could join Saudi Arabia’s military campaign against the Houthis following the deadly airport strike.

When asked whether the United States would participate in the fight, Trump left the possibility open, saying that his administration would examine the situation before making a decision.

The president’s comments came after confirmation that an American was among those killed in the attack, increasing the domestic and diplomatic significance of the incident for Washington.

However, the United States has not yet confirmed a final decision to join Saudi Arabia’s military operations. Any potential intervention would represent a significant development in the conflict and could further widen the confrontation involving regional and international actors.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also condemned the attack, describing the deaths of innocent civilians, including an American citizen, as unacceptable. Washington reaffirmed its support for Saudi Arabia and called for the attacks to stop.

Airport Operations Suspended After Deadly Strike

Following the attack, Saudi aviation authorities temporarily suspended operations at King Khalid International Airport to assess the damage and establish whether airport facilities were safe for use.

The suspension disrupted air travel through one of Saudi Arabia’s principal international aviation hubs, affecting passengers, airlines and other airport operations.

Authorities said the attack caused property damage and that assessments were underway to determine its full extent. Several foreign embassies also issued security warnings to their citizens amid reports of continuing military activity.

The disruption underscores the broader consequences of attacks on civilian infrastructure, particularly airports that serve as essential links for international travel, business and humanitarian movements.

Houthis and Saudi Arabia Face Renewed Confrontation

The airport attack occurred amid a renewed escalation in the conflict between Saudi-backed forces and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement.

Although the Houthis did not immediately claim responsibility for Saturday’s deadly strike, the group had issued warnings concerning the use of Saudi airports, while US officials and Saudi-led coalition representatives attributed the attack to the movement.

The Saudi-led coalition condemned the strike and vowed a response, arguing that attacks on civilian aviation facilities violate international humanitarian principles.

The renewed confrontation threatens to deepen instability across the Arabian Peninsula and the Red Sea region, where conflict has already raised concerns about commercial shipping, aviation security and the movement of essential goods.

A Wider Regional Crisis

The deaths of citizens from several countries highlight the international consequences of the escalating violence. With an American among the victims, the incident has added urgency to discussions in Washington over whether to expand its military role in support of Saudi Arabia.

For now, the key questions remain whether the United States will move beyond diplomatic condemnation, how Saudi Arabia will respond, and whether further attacks will threaten civilian facilities and international travel.

The situation remains fluid, and any confirmed changes in US military policy or responsibility for the latest attack could have significant implications for the wider Middle East conflict.
