Three years after the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attack, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has released a broad assessment of its military operations across multiple fronts, detailing the scale of strikes, incoming attacks, military casualties and the senior figures it says have been eliminated during the conflict.
The figures were released on October 7, 2026, as Israel marks the third anniversary of the attack that killed about 1,200 people and saw 251 others taken hostage. The anniversary has been marked by memorial events across Israel, including commemorations at the site of the Nova music festival.
970 Israeli Soldiers and Security Personnel Killed
According to the latest IDF figures, 970 soldiers, reservists and local security personnel have been killed in operational circumstances since October 7, 2023, while 6,424 have been wounded. Of those killed, 472 died during the ground offensive in Gaza.
The IDF also reported that more than 70% of soldiers wounded during the war have returned to service, highlighting what the military describes as the resilience and continued participation of its personnel. Israel's reserve force has also expanded substantially during the three-year conflict.
Nearly 100,000 Targets Struck
The IDF says it has struck approximately 100,000 targets across several operational arenas since the beginning of the war.
Its breakdown is:
- 65,000 targets in Gaza
- 28,000 targets in Lebanon and Syria
- 4,500 targets in Iran
- 80 targets in Yemen
The figures reflect the transformation of the conflict from an initial Hamas assault into a prolonged regional confrontation involving Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran-backed forces and the Houthis.
More Than 31,500 Projectiles Fired at Israel
The IDF also reported that more than 31,500 rockets, missiles and drones have been launched toward Israel from various fronts since October 7, 2023.
The reported breakdown includes approximately:
- 10,200 from Gaza
- 20,000 from Lebanon
- 1,200 from Iran
- 50 from Syria
- 90 from Yemen
The figures do not include some projectiles that failed to reach Israeli territory or landed short of their intended targets.
Senior Leaders Eliminated Across Multiple Fronts
The IDF's assessment also highlights the elimination of senior figures from Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran's military and political establishment.
On the Palestinian front, those identified include Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif, Ismail Haniyeh and Saleh al-Arouri. On the Lebanon front, the list includes Hassan Nasrallah, Hashem Safieddine, Fouad Shukr and Ibrahim Aqil.
On the Iranian front, the IDF says Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, IRGC commander Hossein Salami, IRGC Aerospace Force commander Amir Ali Hajizadeh, Ali Shamkhani and later Ali Larijani were eliminated during Israeli operations. The IDF has separately published operational accounts concerning the deaths of Khamenei, Salami, Hajizadeh, Shamkhani and Larijani.
A War That Has Reshaped the Region
Three years after October 7, the conflict has fundamentally altered Israel's security environment and the wider Middle East. The IDF says its campaign has degraded the command structures and military capabilities of several organizations operating against Israel, while the scale of casualties and destruction across Gaza and other areas has continued to generate intense international debate and humanitarian concern.
For supporters of Israel's military campaign, the latest figures represent evidence that the country has survived an unprecedented multi-front assault and significantly weakened its adversaries.
The anniversary therefore carries a powerful message for those who share that view: three years after October 7, Israel remains standing, while the leadership structures of several of the forces that attacked or threatened it have been dramatically disrupted.
As the original commentary puts it, the belief is that an “empire of falsehoods” surrounding Israel's conduct and survival is beginning to crumble. Whether that political conclusion will withstand continued international scrutiny remains a matter of intense debate, but the military data released on October 7 provides a striking picture of the scale of the conflict Israel has fought since that devastating day in 2023.
Note: The operational figures above are figures released by the IDF and should therefore be understood as Israeli military claims rather than independently audited casualty or battlefield statistics.
