Tinubu Approves New Military Battalions for Iseyin and Kishi as Oyo State Strengthens Security Network

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of new military battalions in Iseyin and Kishi, two important towns in the Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State, in a move aimed at strengthening the Nigerian Army’s presence and improving security across the region.

The development was announced by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army’s 2 Division, Major General Auwalu B. Mahmuda, during a courtesy visit to His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, the Alaafin of Oyo, on Nigeria’s Independence Day.

The approval represents a significant development for Oke-Ogun communities, where improved security infrastructure could help address concerns about criminal activities, protect residents and safeguard economic activities across the region.

According to the announcement, the two military battalions will operate under the command and supervision of the newly established Military Brigade and Garrison in Oyo town, creating a coordinated military structure to oversee operations across the designated locations.

New Military Formations to Strengthen Security in Oke-Ogun

The establishment of the battalions is expected to expand the Nigerian Army’s operational presence in Oyo State and improve its capacity to respond to security challenges affecting communities in the Oke-Ogun axis.

Iseyin and Kishi are among the notable towns in Oyo State, while the wider Oke-Ogun area includes numerous farming communities and settlements whose economic activities depend on safe roads, accessible markets and stable rural environments.

A stronger military presence could support efforts to protect residents, farmers, traders and transport operators while improving the capacity of security agencies to respond to emerging threats.

However, the precise operational timelines, locations of the facilities and deployment arrangements for the new battalions were not detailed in the announcement.

Oyo State's Wider Security Reinforcement

The latest development comes amid broader efforts to strengthen military operations and address security concerns across Oyo State. In October 2026, Governor Seyi Makinde commended the Nigerian Army for approving additional military formations for the state, including a brigade and battalion in Oyo town, an infantry battalion in Kishi, an artillery regiment battalion in Iseyin and another battalion in Oriire.

The expansion reflects a wider push to improve military coverage, strengthen coordination and enhance the ability of security personnel to respond to threats in different parts of the state.

The Nigerian Army has also emphasised the importance of operational readiness, discipline and strong relations between troops and host communities as new formations are established.

Potential Benefits for Residents and Businesses

For residents of Oke-Ogun, the establishment of the new battalions could provide additional support for security operations and contribute to a safer environment for commerce, agriculture and transportation.

Agriculture remains an important part of Oyo State's economy, with crops including yam, maize, cassava, rice and other produce cultivated across its communities. Improved security could help farmers access their farmlands, transport produce and conduct business with greater confidence.

Nevertheless, the long-term impact of the military expansion will depend on effective deployment, adequate resources, intelligence gathering and cooperation between security agencies, traditional institutions and local communities.

Residents will also be looking for the new formations to translate into practical improvements in response times, protection of vulnerable communities and the prevention of criminal activities.

A New Chapter for Security in Oyo State

President Tinubu's approval of the new battalions in Iseyin and Kishi marks an important step in expanding the Nigerian Army's presence in the Oke-Ogun region.

With the formations expected to operate under the newly established military command structure in Oyo town, the initiative could strengthen security coordination across the area.

As implementation progresses, the key measure of success will be whether the expanded military presence delivers tangible improvements in the safety of residents, protection of livelihoods and stability of communities throughout Oke-Ogun and the wider Oyo State.
