Senator Abdulfatai Omotayo Buhari has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has tasked him with delivering Oyo State for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in both the 2027 presidential and governorship elections.
Buhari, who represents Oyo North Senatorial District in the National Assembly and is a prominent APC figure in the state, reportedly made the declaration while highlighting his relationship with the President and the federal government.
According to the senator, President Tinubu has given him a political assignment to ensure that the APC records a strong performance in Oyo State at the next general elections.
«“The President has asked me to deliver Oyo State for APC, both in Presidential and Governorship elections,” Buhari said.»
He also stated that the President had assented to three of his major demands for the state: the establishment of a federal university in Oke-Ogun, a military formation at Osiele, and the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre associated with his constituency and political advocacy.
The claims come at a politically significant period in Oyo State, where the APC is positioning itself for the 2027 elections. Buhari himself has emerged as one of the politicians whose name is increasingly associated with the party's governorship calculations in the state. His declaration of interest in the Oyo governorship race was reported in December 2025.
Oke-Ogun Federal University Already a Major Development
Of the three demands mentioned by Buhari, the federal university project has substantial publicly available evidence.
The Federal University of Agriculture and Technology (FUNATO), located in Okeho, headquarters of Kajola Local Government Area in Oke-Ogun, was approved by the Federal Government in July 2025. The institution represents a major federal presence in a region that has long demanded greater investment in tertiary education and economic infrastructure.
The university is particularly significant because of Oke-Ogun's agricultural potential. A specialised institution focused on agriculture and technology could potentially support research, skills development, agro-processing, innovation and value addition within one of Oyo State's major agricultural belts.
Buhari has been credited by supporters with playing a significant role in the campaign for the institution. A February 2026 profile published by TheCable reported that the senator was at the forefront of efforts leading to the university's actualisation.
Security and Healthcare Demands
Buhari's reference to a military formation at Osiele and a Federal Medical Centre reflects a broader argument for stronger federal institutional presence and improved security and healthcare infrastructure.
However, while these demands have been attributed to Buhari, publicly accessible evidence reviewed for this report does not independently establish that both projects have already been formally commissioned or fully approved by the Federal Government. They should therefore be regarded as commitments or reported presidential assent pending publication of official government documentation.
Politically, the senator's statement places development projects and electoral mobilisation within the same conversation. His message appears to be that federal interventions in Oyo should translate into political support for the APC at both the presidential and governorship levels.
Buhari is currently chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation and has held several senior legislative positions since entering the National Assembly. He previously served in the House of Representatives and as a commissioner in the Oyo State Government.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, the question will be whether the APC can convert its growing political activity and promised federal interventions into a statewide electoral advantage.
For Buhari, the assignment is clear: deliver Oyo State for the APC.
Whether that political objective can be achieved will ultimately depend on the party's organisation, candidate selection, alliances, grassroots mobilisation and, most importantly, the verdict of Oyo voters at the polls.
