Edo State Police Arrest 14 Suspects in Connection with Lynching of 16 Travelers

In a tragic incident on March 27, 2025, sixteen travelers were lynched by a mob along the Uromi/Obajana Expressway in the Udune Efandion Community of Edo State. The Edo State Police Command has since arrested 14 individuals suspected of involvement in the killings.

The victims, part of a group of 25 travelers, were journeying from Elele, Rivers State, aboard a truck with registration number KKF 225 XA. Upon reaching Uromi, local vigilante members intercepted the vehicle and discovered some occupants in possession of locally made dane guns. This discovery led to suspicions of criminal intent, prompting the vigilantes to detain the armed individuals. However, the situation escalated when an alarm was raised, branding the travelers as suspected kidnappers. This incited community members and passersby to attack, resulting in the lynching of sixteen travelers and the burning of their truck.

Police operatives from the Uromi Division responded swiftly upon receiving information about the incident. They managed to rescue ten travelers, two of whom sustained injuries and were transported to a hospital where they are reportedly responding well to treatment. In the course of their investigation, authorities apprehended 14 suspects linked to the crime and convened an emergency meeting with community stakeholders to address the situation.

To prevent further unrest, a unit of Police Mobile Force personnel, along with other tactical teams, has been deployed to the area. The Commissioner of Police emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence among various groups and urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement as investigations continue. She also cautioned against any form of reprisal attacks or unlawful gatherings that could escalate tensions.

This incident has sparked outrage on social media, with politicians from northern Nigeria condemning the killings and calling for justice. The Edo State Government has vowed that the perpetrators will face the full wrath of the law, emphasizing that no individual has the right to take another's life.

The Edo State Police Command continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event and is committed to ensuring that justice is served.
