Violent Clash Erupts Between Security Forces and Shiite IMN Members During Quds Procession in Abuja

Clash Erupts Between Security Forces and Shiite IMN Members During Quds Procession in Abuja

On Friday, March 28, 2025, a violent confrontation occurred between Nigerian security operatives and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as Shiites, during the annual Quds Day procession in Abuja. The incident took place around the Banex roundabout in Wuse 2, a bustling district in the Federal Capital Territory.

Background of the Quds Day Procession

Quds Day, observed globally on the last Friday of Ramadan, is a day of solidarity with the Palestinian people, protesting the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. In Nigeria, the IMN has traditionally marked this day with peaceful processions to express support for Palestine. Participants often carry Palestinian flags and chant slogans advocating for Palestinian freedom.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Clash

According to reports, the procession commenced peacefully after the Jumat prayers. However, tensions escalated when security personnel attempted to disperse the gathering near Zenith Bank at Banex. Eyewitnesses reported that some protesters began hurling stones at the soldiers, prompting the security forces to respond with gunfire to disperse the crowd. The exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, but there are indications of injuries among the IMN members.

Statements from IMN Representatives

Jafaar Gali, one of the leaders of the IMN procession, recounted the events, stating, "We were around Zenith Bank at Banex when some soldiers came to stop us." He acknowledged that some members reacted by throwing stones at the soldiers. Gali also claimed that many IMN members were killed or injured during the clash, though these figures have yet to be independently verified.

Security Forces' Response

As of now, official statements from the Nigerian security agencies regarding the incident are limited. The authorities have previously expressed concerns over IMN processions, citing issues related to public safety and order. Efforts to manage such gatherings have often led to confrontations, highlighting the ongoing tensions between the IMN and security forces.

Historical Context and Ongoing Tensions

The IMN has a history of organizing demonstrations in Nigeria, many of which have resulted in clashes with security operatives. The group's leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, has been in detention since December 2015, following a violent encounter between IMN members and the Nigerian Army in Zaria, Kaduna State. This prolonged detention has been a focal point of the group's protests, further straining relations with the government.

Call for Investigation and Peaceful Resolution

Human rights organizations and concerned citizens have called for a thorough investigation into the recent clash to ascertain the facts and ensure accountability. There is an urgent need for dialogue between the Nigerian government and the IMN to address underlying issues and prevent future violence. Upholding the rights to peaceful assembly and expression, while ensuring public safety, remains a delicate balance that authorities must navigate carefully.

As the situation develops, it is imperative for all parties involved to exercise restraint and seek peaceful avenues to resolve conflicts, fostering a more harmonious and inclusive society.
