Jandor Returns to APC: Former Lagos PDP Gubernatorial Candidate Rejoins Ruling Party Ahead of 2027 Elections

In a significant political development, Dr. Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, widely known as Jandor, has officially rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC) after a stint with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This move is poised to reshape the political landscape of Lagos State as the 2027 elections approach.

Jandor's Political Journey: From APC to PDP and Back

Jandor, a prominent figure in Lagos politics, initially made his mark within the APC, where he led the Lagos4Lagos Movement, advocating for internal democracy and inclusiveness. In January 2022, seeking a platform to further his gubernatorial ambitions, he defected to the PDP and secured the party’s ticket for the 2023 Lagos State governorship election. Despite his efforts, he finished third, trailing behind the incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the APC and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party.

Reasons Behind the Defection

Jandor cited internal challenges within the PDP as catalysts for his departure. He expressed frustration over persistent anti-party activities, internal sabotage, and a lack of discipline among party members. Specifically, he accused the Lagos State PDP Chairman, Mr. Philip Aivoji, of undermining his candidacy by falsely announcing his withdrawal on the eve of the gubernatorial election. Additionally, he alleged that Chief Olabode George, a notable PDP leader in Lagos, openly supported the candidate of another party, further complicating his campaign efforts.

Consultations and Return to APC

Following his resignation from the PDP two weeks prior, Jandor embarked on a series of consultations with political stakeholders. Notably, he met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja to discuss his decision to return to the APC. This meeting underscored his intent to realign with his former political allies and contribute to the development of Lagos State under the APC banner.

Official Announcement

On Monday, March 17, 2025, Jandor held a press conference at his campaign office in Ikeja, Lagos, to formally announce his return to the APC. He emphasized that his decision was driven by a commitment to the progress of Lagos State and a belief that unity among progressives is essential for achieving collective aspirations. He expressed gratitude towards President Tinubu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and Seyi Tinubu for facilitating his return to the party.

Implications for Lagos Politics

Jandor's defection is expected to have significant implications for Lagos politics. His return to the APC could bolster the party's dominance in the state and influence the dynamics of the upcoming 2027 elections. Conversely, his departure further compounds the challenges facing the Lagos PDP, which has been grappling with internal disputes and leadership crises.

Conclusion

Dr. Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran's return to the APC marks a pivotal moment in Lagos State politics. As the state gears up for future elections, his political maneuvers will be closely watched by stakeholders and constituents alike, reflecting the ever-evolving nature of Nigeria's political landscape.
