RALEIGH, N.C. — April 13, 2025 — North Carolina is experiencing its most severe flu season in over a decade, with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) reporting more than 500 flu-related deaths for the 2024–2025 respiratory virus season. This marks the highest number of statewide flu deaths recorded since broad reporting began in 2009 .
The surge in fatalities has been attributed to the predominance of more severe influenza strains this season, leading to increased complications, particularly among high-risk groups such as young children and the elderly. In early February, the state reported a significant spike in flu-related deaths, with 57 fatalities recorded in a single week .
Compounding the crisis, North Carolina has faced substantial reductions in federal public health funding, amounting to over $100 million, with an additional $230 million at risk. These cuts have strained the state's capacity to respond effectively to the escalating public health emergency .
Health officials continue to urge residents to receive annual flu vaccinations and adhere to preventive measures to mitigate the spread of the virus. The NCDHHS emphasizes that seasonal influenza remains a serious and potentially fatal illness, underscoring the importance of public health initiatives and community vigilance.
