Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has publicly declared his support for President Bola Tinubu's anticipated second-term bid in the 2027 elections. This endorsement marks a notable divergence from his father's recent political realignment.
Nasir El-Rufai, once a prominent ally of President Tinubu and a key figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed uncertainty about his continued affiliation with the party and his support for Tinubu's re-election. In a February 2025 interview, he stated, "I don't know if I will support Tinubu in 2027. I will evaluate the situation at the time, and I will consult widely".
Further distancing himself from the APC, El-Rufai has reportedly joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and formed a coalition with other opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party spokesperson Yunusa Tanko, aiming to challenge Tinubu's administration in the upcoming elections.
Bello El-Rufai's support for President Tinubu underscores the complex dynamics within Nigerian political families and highlights the evolving landscape as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections.
