The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially addressed the recent arrest of Nigerian social media influencer and activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM). The arrest, which took place on May 2, 2025, at a bank premises in Area 3, Abuja, was a coordinated operation involving the EFCC, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement released on its official X (formerly Twitter) page, the EFCC clarified that Otse was invited for questioning following multiple petitions alleging his involvement in serious financial crimes. The agency emphasized that Otse failed to honor previous invitations, necessitating his apprehension.
"We picked him up based on several complaints that he used his social media platforms to harass, insult, and intimidate individuals — actions that may contravene the Cybercrimes Act of 2015," an EFCC source disclosed.
Otse's arrest has sparked widespread public interest and speculation, particularly given his history of controversial online commentary and activism. In previous instances, Otse has accused EFCC officials of misconduct. In September 2024, he challenged the EFCC to investigate its officers before summoning him over allegations against them, expressing distrust in the commission and questioning the integrity of its operations.
Furthermore, Otse has been linked to the dissemination of a leaked audio involving Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, alleging that EFCC officials accepted a ₦15 million bribe to drop money laundering charges against the crossdresser. This claim prompted the EFCC to invite both Otse and Bobrisky for questioning to assist in unearthing the alleged bribery.
The House of Representatives has since mandated its Committees on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Institutions to investigate the bribery allegations against the EFCC and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), following a motion of urgent public importance.
Otse's legal representation and supporters have raised concerns about the motives behind his arrest, suggesting it may be an attempt to silence his critical voice against corruption and misconduct within Nigerian institutions. As the investigation unfolds, the public awaits further clarification on the charges and the outcome of the EFCC's inquiries.
