Nigerian Billionaire 'Classic Baggie' Indicted in U.S. for Leading International Fraud Syndicate

Olugbenga Lawal, a Nigerian entrepreneur known by the alias "Classic Baggie," has been indicted in the United States for allegedly orchestrating a vast international fraud and money laundering operation. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Delaware has charged Lawal with receiving over 3 million through schemes involving Business Email Compromise (BEC) and romance scams, funneling illicit funds from victims across the U.S. to Nigeria.

According to court documents, Lawal was a central figure in a criminal organization dubbed the "Miami Crew." He reportedly managed the laundering of fraud proceeds by directing co-conspirators to open bank accounts, receive wire transfers from victims, and purchase vehicles worth over 600,000, which were then shipped to Nigeria. Evidence presented includes text messages and bank records linking Lawal to these transactions.

Lawal's prominence in Nigeria, where he was celebrated as a philanthropist, contrasts sharply with his alleged criminal activities. The indictment underscores the challenges posed by transnational cybercrime networks and the importance of international cooperation in combating such schemes.

This case is part of a broader effort by U.S. authorities to dismantle global fraud networks. In a related operation, 80 individuals, primarily Nigerian nationals, were charged in a massive conspiracy involving various online fraud schemes, resulting in millions of dollars in losses.

Lawal faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. If convicted, he could face significant prison time and forfeiture of assets. The case highlights the evolving nature of cyber-enabled financial crimes and the ongoing efforts to hold perpetrators accountable.
